Seaforth couple celebrates 70th anniversary
Jeff H e u c h e r t
Bob and Eileen Hook, both 94
years old and residents at Seaforth
Manor, recently celebrated their
70th wedding anniversary.
Bob, who's originally from
England, and Eileen, originally
from Forest, Ont., met while work-
ing together at Holeproofs, a manu-
facturer of women's hosiery, in
downtown London Ontario.
The year was 1928, Bob and
Eileen were 17, and Charles
Lindbergh had successfully flown
across the Atlantic Ocean, the year
before.
In doing so Lindbergh became an
iconic figure, so much so, the style of
flying cap he wore on his flight
became a popular style for women.
Eileen Hook was wearing one of
those hats one night while leaving a
movie theatre with a friend.
As she left, a recognizable face
from work came up to her, ad
asked her for a date.
Since that day, Bob and Eileen
Hook have been inseparable.
When asked what moment in their
70 years together stands out Bob
replies, "the hat," referring to what
Eileen was wearing the night he
asked her on their first date.
Recalling the moment, Eileen says
"Clothes were important in those
days."
Bob follows up his thought say-
ing, "1129 Trafalger St.", which
turns out to be the address he
Bob and Eileen Hook .
picked Eileen up at for their
date.
The couple dated for seven years
before getting married.
Trying to recall
how Bob proposed,
Eileen says laugh-
ing "he's not the
romantic type."
"He was the
silent type, but
maybe that's what
I noticed about
him."
The couple lived
in their first home
together for 20

Bob and Eileen were fortunate to

work straight through the depres-
sion in the `30s.
"We were lucky, we made a decent
wage," she says.
During the Second World War
Eileen helped put together food bas-
kets for the soldiers.
Because of Bob's age and that he
had a family, he was further down
the recruitment list and was never
called upon to fight.
Around 1950 Bob set out to build
his family a new home in east
London.
Steven recalls his father spending
every Saturday at the library read-
ing up on how to build a house.
The project was finished and the
family moved within a year of when
he began.
In 1966 Holeproofs closed, and
Bob, now age 55, found a job at the

where he worked for 10 years until
he retired.
