Alliance asking province for cash advance
Jeff H e u c 6 e r t
The Huron -Perth Healthcare
Alliance has passed a motion to ask
the Ministry of Health and Long -
Term Care for a cash advance on
the upcoming fiscal year.
The decision came during the
Alliance's board meeting Nov. 3 at
the Seaforth Community Hospital,
following a presentation by Alliance
CEO Andrew Williams.
The board feels the cash advance

finding a way to keep
the centre open.
"I'm giving the girls
(the daycare staff) six
months to bring it
around," he says. "We
had our teeth kicked in
by the county but I have
faith that they will bring
it around."
Seili says the rent
from the resource con-
sultant was important
revenue for Tuckersmith
Day Nursery.
"Our numbers were
improving but the
biggest problem is the
uncertainty. I will fight
hook and tail to keep it
(the daycare centre)
open," he says.
Seili says he believes
that the daycare can be
run as a "revenue neu-
tral proposal" without a
deficit.
He points out that
without a daycare, its
$34,000 a year rent to
the Vanastra Recreation
Centre will have to be
absorbed by the pool.
"Then, the building
will run a deficit like
every other community
centre. Council has to
look at the whole pic-
ture," he says.
is necessary to "reduce the potential
interest expense in the 2006-2007
fiscal year," Williams said in his
report.
The Alliance is facing a year-end
deficit of $3.7 million for the 2005-
2006 fiscal year, down from its ini-
tial estimate of $4.9 million.
This is due in part to "on going
and one-time savings related to a
recent salary award and forecasted
revenue increase relating to OHIP,"
the report said.
The Alliance receives on average
$60 million from the province each
year in funding, which is usually
distributed evenly over 12 months.
The proposal would see the
Alliance receive their $5 million for
March 2007 at the beginning of
their fiscal year in April 2006.
The cash advance would give the
Alliance $10 million in April, and
nothing in March.
Williams told the board members
he hopes that with the cash
advance, the Alliance can "get into a
sustained financial position," by the
end of the fiscal year.
As of now, hospitals have submit-
ted their expected budgets for 2005-
2006 to the ministry.
In the next few weeks, the
Alliance should be hearing back
from the province to set up a meet-
ings, where plans to either receive
more funding or reduce or cut ser-
vices will be discussed.

Deceptively modest from the outside, this two -bedroom -plus -
den family home packs a big punch, spatially speaking. The
front door opens onto a compact foyer with 12 -foot ceilings.
There is a display cabinet located over the coat closet on the left.
Opposite is a roomy den with a bay window, and beyond are
stairs going down to the basement (unfinished). From here, a
slight dogleg Leads under an archway to the combination great
room -kitchen -dining area. The great room, with a built-in
fireplace flanked by an entertainment unit, is separated from the
kitchen only by an island with a raised eating bar, enabling the
cook to catch the television news and keep tabs on the family.
