Janelle Wood
in a first world country and that
means we're able to assist others
around the world," she said.
Wood was speaking at the annual
Remembrance Day banquet at the
Seaforth Legion where her grand-
mother Ann Wood is the current
president.
She told Seaforth Legion members
about the 29.4 million people affect-
ed by HIV and AIDs in Subsaharan
Africa who make up three-quarters
of the total affected by the virus
across the globe.
In a country where most families
earn the equivalent of $100 U.S. a
year, Wood said poverty is one of the
leading causes of AIDS in Tanzania.
"Spending money on condoms is
not feasible when you can't afford to
put enough food on the table for
your family," she said.
She said a lack of education, a
lack of access to medical care and
AIDS testing, a lack of rights for
women and a corrupt government
that does not release medicine for
AIDS to the population also play a
part.
"Men in Tanzania can have up to
10 wives so they can spread the dis-
ease to all of their wives. And, the
wife doesn't have the option to say
no," she said.
She added that a huge stigma
against the disease causes anyone
with HIV or AIDS to hide the infor-
mation and most death certificates
say malaria or tuberculosis instead
of the primary cause of death.
Working with Youth Challenge
International and Africa Alive,
Wood helped to educate youth and
women about the transmission of
AIDS and its prevention.
She also shared information about
the culture and simple lifestyle of
the people of the village of
Mpwapwa where she stayed for
three months earlier this year.
She talked about how she learned
how to pluck a chicken and cook
over an open fire.
"They work to live over there -
they don't work for special things
like cars or earrings. They live in
mud huts and a lot of women go
blind quite young because of the
smoke from the cooking fires," she
said.
Wood said she was also moved by
a visit to the island of Zanzibar
where slave markets were located
from 1830-1873.
"I saw many of the hardships this
country has experienced," she said.
Wood said she has begun to ques-
tion if what she did made any differ-
ence once she discovered recently
that Youth Challenge International
pulled its project out of Mpwapwa
after one and a half years, instead of
the promised three.
"Those youth learned something
and were able to spread the word
and I helped to send someone to
school, but it was a small contribu-
tion," she said.
But, she added that the experi-
ence changed her life forever.
"May we remember and say
thanks for all the men and women
who fought and continue to fight for
freedom and democracy around the
world," she said.
