Huron East council
has agreed to restore
the gates on Highway
4 in Vanastra.
The cost of the
repairs, which may not
be known until
December, will come
out of next year's
budget.
Huron East Mayor
Joe Seili says they will
replace much of the
stone pillars as well as
put in new posts,
although they're not
sure if gates will be
put on.
The issue of
repairing the gates has
been discussed by
council over the past
three years.
In 2002, the
estimated cost for
repairs was $1200.

Vanastra daycare
threatened by
county decision,
says Huron East
Mark Nonkea

Huron County approved a plan to offer extended
support for small day cares located in family homes,
despite a threat that one municipal child care centre
could close.
The move puts an emphasis on having daycare
resource consultants expand their services to help
special needs children in both municipal centres and
private homes that offer child care services.
However, the Nov. 3 decision came with uproar from
Huron East Mayor Joe Seili and Deputy Mayor Bernie
MacLellan.
"If this goes ahead, this closes our daycare services,"
MacLellan told the county councillors.
At the heart of the matter is the Tuckersmith Day
Nursery, which received funding through the resource
consultants.
In the past, the five resource consultants in Huron
(who fill 3.5 positions) were located in offices at the
municipal daycare centres in Vanastra, Goderich and
Wingham.
In Tuckersmith's case $19,300 was given to the
centre to have the resource consultant in place.
Under the new plan, which starts in 2006, the
resource consultants will be located out of a central
location and will drive to both municipal centres, as
well as licensed private homes offering child care, a
service that was not available before.
MacLellan said that having resource consultants who

The future of Tuckersmith Day
Nursery will be up for discussion once
more at Huron East council next week,
says Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan.
"I will be bringing it up. I don't think
it's fair for the ratepayers of Huron
East to put another $20,000 towards
the daycare when so few of them use
the service," he says, 'adding that at
least half of the families who use the'
daycare live outside of Huron East.
A decision made last week by Huron
County council to remove resource
consultants from three municipal
daycare centres will take close to
$20,000 from Tuckersmith Day
Nursery's annual budget was the "final
straw" for MacLellan.
At county council last week,
MacLellan "guaranteed" the county's
decision will close Tuckersmith Day
Nursery.
The deficit at Tuckersmith Day
Nursery has been an issue with Huron
East council since amalgamation in
2000. But, while Tuckersmith has
struggled with deficits as high as
$70,000 in the past, it has reduced the
deficit to an expected $30,000 this year.
However, MacLellan said he will not
be making any motions to close the
daycare until he hears the opinions of
the rest of council.
"At this point, anything is on the
table. If anyone has any ideas about
how to keep the daycare open, I'd do
anything to help," he said.
Mayor Joe Seili said the county's
decision "will be a blow" to the daycare
centre but adds he's still committed to
