St. Anne's set for 10 -year reunion
Jennifer H u b b a r d
Eagles of the past and
present will be taking a
stroll down memory lane
this weekend as they cele-
brate "10 years together."
A variety of events are
planned for the Nov. 4-5
reunion for everyone
involved in the St. Anne's
school community during
its first decade.
"I think it's important
that parents, students and
staff celebrate what has
happened in the past 10
years here at St. Anne's,"
principal Philip McMillan
said.
"Starting a new school,
with all its own traditions
is a pretty substantial
task, but with the wel-
come that the community
has provided it's been a
great 10 years."
St. Anne's Catholic
Secondary School first
opened its doors to 139
Grade 9 students in
September 1995. Ten
years — and a two addi-
tions — later, the school
houses more than 700 stu-
dents.
The first Eagles class
graduated in 1999.
McMillan praised the
school community for suc-
cessfully creating a unique
identity for St. Anne's fea-
turing strengths in "the
three As — academics, the
arts and athletics."
"The school has grown in
many ways since those
first days in September
1995. It is my hope that
your chance to revisit
those days with others
will remind you of all that
we are at St Anne's," he
said on the reunion web-
site.
"Staff and students have
made this community
what it is today."
Looking at the two-day
schedule, McMillan is con-
fident the reunion will
highlight St. Anne's three
areas of success.
Following registration at
5:30 p.m., Friday's activi-
ties will feature a tradi-
tional Eagles coffee house
in the cafeteria and ath-
letics in the gym.
Badminton will kick off
the athletics schedule at 6
p.m. The varsity girls and
boys basketball and vol-
leyball teams will also be
reunited on Friday.
The coffee house will
begin at 7 p.m.
Saturday morning's plans
are chock full of athletics
including golf, soccer,
rugby and hockey. The golf
tournament is open to all
and begin at Woodlands
Links Golf Course at 9
a.m.
Chaplain Bridget Bates
encouraged all reunion
participants to attend a
celebration mass on
Saturday at 4 p.m.
"I welcome each of you to
take some time to visit St.
Anne's school and join us
in prayers in the chapel
for the future success and
safety of the people in our
school community," she
said on the website.
"The chapel has gone
through many changes in
the past four years since I
arrived at here and
worked from changing the
chapel -classroom into a
full chapel used for prayer
including visits with the
Blessed Sacrament now
housed here in the build-
ing as of May 27, 2005."
Dinner, catered by the
Dinner Bell Restaurant,
will be in the gymnasium
at 6 p.m., with an age of
majority dance to follow.
With space limits of 300
for the dinner and dance,
McMillan said organizers
are hoping a "good num-
ber" of students, staff and
family members will
return for the reunion.
Planning for the two-day
event began more than a
year ago, with a reunion
committee of eight staff
members.
Tours of the school will
be offered throughout the
event. Those wanting a
memento of the reunion
celebrations can purchase
past yearbooks and sou-
venir clothing.
"I'm really looking for-
ward to it. It's going to be
an emotional event, I
think," McMillan com-
mented.
"People are all saying the
same thing ... they can't
believe the building has
been open for 10 years
already."
