Stratford doctor discusses laparoscopic surgery
at men's health dinner on prostate cancer
Jeff Heuchert
Prostate cancer is the most com-
mon form of cancer found in men,
particularly over the age of 65.
That's why it was a suitable topic
of discussion at the men's health
dinner held in Holmesville, by the
Canadian Cancer Society Huron
Perth Volunteer Council.
Guest speaker, urologist Dr.
Bernard Bukula, spoke to the group
of about 50 at the White Carnation
Banquet Hall.
The Huron Perth unit manager of
the Cancer Society Janis
Cunningham said, in a statement
prior to the evening that it was
about time they organized an event
specifically for men.
"We want to help bring awareness
and openness, and to help men take
control of their health," she said.
Dr. Bukula spoke about the com-
mon facts of prostate cancer, like
how one in eight men will be diag-
nosed with it, and although these
numbers are decreasing, one in six
will die from it.
Now is the time
to inform men
about this dis-
ease, according to
Dr. Bukula.
"Men's knowl-
edge is way
behind women's,"
he said.
The most com-
mon ways of
being diagnosed
with prostate
cancer is through
a digital rectal
examination, or a
blood test.
If it's suspected
you have the dis-
ease they will
either conduct a biopsy or an image
study, by either a x-ray, ultrasound,
CT scan, MRI, or bone scan.
Once it has been confirmed you
have prostate cancer, you have the
option of either radiation or hor-
mone therapy, or surgery, to remove
the prostate entirely.
Up until recently, the only way to
remove the prostate was through a
procedure called a Radical
Retropubic Prostatectomy (RRP).
Dr. Bukula spent much of the pre-
sentation focussed on a relatively
new form of surgery called a
Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy
(LRP).
Currently only four doctors in
Ontario will perform the surgery,
which just like a RRP, removes the
prostate.
It was first discussed around 10
years ago, but it wasn't until the
past couple years, that its technique
was patented.
Dr. Bukula
spoke of LRP's
advantages,
opposed to a RRP.
He said there is
less blood loss
during the opera-
tion, shorter hos-
pital stay with a
quicker recovery
period.
