"A committee response to elder abuse was no longer present," he said. "We think this is a need in Huron County." REACH is a volunteer organization with the goal to bring awareness and educate the community on elder abuse. The committee consists of people who thought this issue should be addressed. "We're a group of service providers, who want to be involved," said Todd. Abuse is the act of mistreating someone or something whether it be physi- cally, mentally, financially, or sexually. REACH is working to provide help and information that will benefit the elderly and vulnerable in the county who have been, or are being mistreat- ed. Last week MPP Carol Mitchell notified REACH that they will receive a provincial grant worth $49,500 in answer to the committee's proposal for funding towards a new initiative. The grant will work towards funding the Safety Guide for Older and Vulnerable Persons, that will provide information about what is happening within the community in regards to elder abuse, and what people can do to help. The guide will be published in hard -copy, large print, audio, and on a website. REACH works in conjunction with The Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention of elder abuse and neglect, according to the committee's web site. An employee at Maplewood Manor in Seaforth, JoAnne Heimpel believes this is a step in the right direction. "It's a great thing that they are researching it (elder abuse)," said Heimpel. "There's good thought behind it. I'm just not sure how they are going to go about doing it." One thing the committee plans to do is set up a common place within the county where all resources can be shared, and where people can go to get help. Todd said this initiative is to bring awareness and edu- cate everyone. "I don't think elder abuse respects borders. I don't think any kind of abuse respects borders."
