Blyth Festival reflects 2005
season 'a good one'
With summer now behind us, it's time for
the staff and management of the Blyth
Festival to reflect on the season past. Overall,
it was a good one, according to the artistic
director.
After 82 performances including three world
premiers, the popular local theatre met or
exceeded expectations.
"It looks like we've hit our goals for the sea-
son," says Eric Coates, the Festival's artistic
director. "I'm very happy about that."
The biggest seller of the season which saw
over 24,000 seats sold during the Festival's
11 -week run, was The Thirteenth One.
"That's the best news," says Coates. "The
Thirteenth One was our biggest risk this sea-
son and it paid off. That •show proved that
Blyth is unique in Canadian theatre. Some
nights even I couldn't get a ticket!"
That show, with its large cast including a
number of local children, was created by first
time playwright Denyse Gervais Regan.
Premiering a play from a first-time writer is,
according to General Manager Jane Gardner,
a big risk but one which Blyth is used to tak-
ing.
"We really had no idea how it would do,"
says Gardner, "but it ended up being the run-
away hit of the season. It was just terrific."
As with many of the shows on the Blyth
'stage, it is often word of mouth which makes
or breaks a production.
Looking forward to next season is the task
at hand for Coates and his staff. In a theatre
whose mandate is new Canadian works,
Coates has a lofty goal in mind.
"My goal is to have the Festival present its
100th world premiere," he says, with some
confidence.
As of August this year, Blyth has been the
birthplace of 96 plays, many of which have
since gone on to great critical acclaim else-
where.
To achieve his goal, Coates will need to find
four new plays that fit the bill and fill the
seats.
"The hardest part is finding a good comedy
that fits our audience," Coates reveals. "But
that's what I'm shooting for."
For the moment there's still time to take a
deep breath and enjoy the success of the sea-
son past.
