The Huron County Master Gardeners group is looking for Master Gardeners and Master Gardeners in Training to join their group. Currently the group has about 10 members across the county. Master Gardeners started in the tri -counties of Huron -Bruce and Grey in 1996 before becoming too cumbersome and branching off into four separate groups. The Huron County group was formed in 2000. There are 36 Master Gardeners groups in the province with approximately 700 members. Is a Master Gardener just someone born with a green thumb that's a master in his or her garden? Not really. Master Gardener Elaine Bertrand, near Holmesville, explained that a Master Gardener has to complete three approved horticulture courses in addition to meeting volunteer requirements of sharing their knowledge. Master Gardeners are require to spend a minimum of 20 volunteer hours offering advice in their communities and 10 hours of administrative time going to meetings a year. "Master Gardeners are experienced gardeners who enjoy volunteering their time and knowledge to help others," said Bertrand. Master Gardeners are able to provide accurate, non -biased information on products and do not endorse them. Eleanor Horst, coordinator for the Huron group said Master Gardeners don't field questions from professional growers or agricultural, They strictly offer advice to horticultural gardeners and also advice on growing houseplants. Last year the Huron County Master Gardeners group answered 225 inquires, attended 13 clinics or seminars, did eight speaking engagements, one newspaper article and contributed 527 hours of volunteer time. Many of the Master Gardeners belong to their local horticultural society. The Huron County Master Gardeners group also has a Speaker's Bureau of members who are willing to give presentations to groups.
