McClure represents
Canada in internationa
triathlon competition
in Hawaii
Jeff Heuchert
After his first international triathlon compe-
tition this past Saturday in Honolulu,
Dublin's Tim McClure left with a better
understanding of what it's going to take to
compete.
McClure finished
60th, out of the 100
competitors, however
fifth out of the 12
representatives from
Canada.
Although McClure
says he's happy with
the results, he wishes
he could have done
better.
"I'm not 100 per
cent satisfied," he
says.
McClure is treating
the event as a learn-
ing experience, and
says he now has a
better understanding
of where he needs to
be to compete at this
level.
"I learned so much
about what kind of
commitment you
need to get to this
point."
The event consisted
of a 1,500 metre
swim, which McClure
finished in 12 min-
utes, a 40 -kilometer
bike, which he did in
65 minutes, and a 10 -
kilometer run, fin-
ished in 40 minutes.
"I knew I was fit,
but the guys there are a totally
level," he says about his competition.
McClure had the opportunity to swim in the
ocean with 99 other competitors.
He says it was different when they all start-
ed thrashing their arms to try and advance in
the water.
But it was the final leg of the race McClure
remembers.
"It was cool being on the run with the whole
street lined with spectators," he says.
Another first for McClure was representing
his country .
"It was neat
putting on the jersey
and seeing the words
Canada," he says.
,As for now,
McClure is competing
on the cross country
team for Brock
University, where he
is a student.
Treating this
time as an off-season,
McClure plans to work
on his swimming,
which he considers the
weakest of his three
skills.
In May the
triathlon season will
begin again, and
McClure will be ready
to go.
He plans to
compete at the same
level this upcoming
season.
McClure's goal,
like any athlete, is to
one day compete for
the Canadian Olympic
team, but McClure
recognizes that he is
not ready yet.
As for now he's
just excited about
swimming, biking, and
Tim McClure
different
running again soon.
"There's always that desire to get better,"
says McClure. "I can't wait till next season,
I'm antsy."
