Volunteer drivers needed in Seaforth area
Canadian Cancer Society desperately needs drivers to take patients to cancer services
Volunteer drivers are des-
perately needed in Seaforth
to drive local cancer
patients to treatment.
"People turn to us
they don't have any
way to get to their
cancer care -
appointments,"
explains Janis
Cunningham,
manager of the
Society ' s
Huron -Perth
Unit.
"We're com-
mitted to help-
ing but the real-
ity is, we must
get more dri-
vers or we may
not be able to,"
she says.
While there
are volunteer
drivers in
Clinton, Mitchell and
Goderich, Cunningham says
there are none presently in
Seaforth.
"It ebbs and flows and
while we have no cancer
patients needing a drivier in
Seaforth right now, we could
have one all of a sudden,"
she says.
Volunteer drivers help
those with cancer by driving
them to and from' cancer
care -related appointments
in local areas including
Goderich, Wingham, and
Stratford, and/or to the can-
cer centre in London or
Kitchener.
Although up to each vol-
unteer, some also drive
clients to appointments in
when
other
Hamilton and Toronto.
"Usually, a driver will
drive once a week if there's
a need," explains
Cunningham.
The service is free of
charge for those
who use it but
drivers are
reimbursed
at a per
kilometre
rate by the
Canadian
Cancer
Society to
help cover
the cost of
the gas, oil,
and a por-
tion of the
mainte-
nance and
tire wear
} on
vehicle.
Husband and wife,
Charlie and Roxie
Adams of Goderich are
dedicated Cancer Society
drivers.
"I like to help people
and I enjoy their compa-
ny," explains Charlie. "I
really feel like I'm doing
something for someone."
Volunteer drivers must
have a smoke and scent -
free car and attend a dri-
ver education session
before they begin driving
for the organization.
The training takes one
and a half days and cen-
tres around interacting
with clients and becom-
ing familiar with ser-
vic'es- offered by the
`We're commit-
ted to helping
but the reality
is, we must get
more drivers

be able to,' --

Health Unit, will be offered on Thursday, Oct. 27 from 4
to 7 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 10 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the
Seaforth Legion.

ics," says Jackie Walker, support staff at the health unit.
Clinics will also be held again this year at local
schools.
Anyone wishing a flu shot can also arrange for one
through their family doctor.
The health unit asks that anyone attending the flu
