UWO donation includes footage of 1949

Twenty minutes of footage
of Seaforth's Main Street in
1949 is "a wonderful piece of
film" discovered in 100 reels
of eight millimetre film
donated recently to the
University of Western
Ontario.
"Seaforth's is one of the
good ones. It takes up one
reel and it's not Cecil B.
DeMille but it'll show a lot
of neat stuff," says UWO
media specialist Alan Noon.
Noon is helping to trans-
fer the film depicting 84
small towns and villages in
post -Second World War
southwestern Ontario onto
DVD.
The film, called the "Stars
of the Town" collection, was
donated to Western's
Archives ,and Research
Collections Centre by Rev.
Marion Massecar, 87, whose
late husband Leroy (Roy)
travelled throughout south-
western Ontario for two
years filming as many peo-
ple as he could.
Massecar filmed towns,
including people shopping
inside stores and walking
and driving 1920s and `30s
cars and horse-drawn wag-
ons on Main Streets, and

then rented a local hall and
charged the townspeople 45
cents to view the footage.
Massecar made a living
for two years by creating
films, paying his way
through university with the
project before he became an
ordained minister and
moved to the United States.
"It's a real slice of life.
People seem very relaxed
and to be relying on their
neighbours. It was a time
when people shopped every
day on Main Street," says
Noon.

"The films take you back
further than you'd think
because the cars are mostly
older than the 1940s. There
seems to be no line between
old and new," says Noon.
One noticeable difference
between now and then is
the prevalence of smokers
in the footage.
"Everyone is smoking.
That got to me right away.
Even the shopkeeper is
shown putting down a ciga-
rette to slice a piece of
cheese. But, that was the
standard of the times.
People were tougher and
had a tolerance level for
that," he says.
