Huron Hurricanes Aquatic Club
diving into new season with new
staff and high hopes
Jennifer Hubbard
Fresh off two of "rebuilding" sea-
sons, the Huron Hurricanes
Aquatic Club is ready to compete.
And with the help of seven new
staff members, the club's 90 swim=
mers will keep their opponents on
their toes, Hurricanes head coach
Julia Pettapiece said.
"Our main goal is to improve the
overall performance of the team,"
she explained. "We've spent the
last two years building the club to
spread throughout the county and
now we have to go back to the
drawing board to provide a real
thorough development program."
The Hurricanes staff now
includes general manager Amanda
Poppe, development coach Tom
Heinbuch, novice coaches Sarah
Vaessen, Valerie Otten and Erika
Mattucci and `I Can Swim' teach-
ers Christy Hartman and Jocelyn
Bartliff. -Pettapiece will continue
her duties as head coach.
Each coach will be assigned a
group of swimmers to mentor dur-
ing the season, helping with condi-
tioning, practices and meets.
"Sure I can coach 40, 50 or 60
kids, but to have contact with each
swimmer the way a good coach
should is just not possible,"
Pettapiece said."There just aren't
enough hours in a day.
"The kids are really going to
swim better because they have
more time with their coaches."
Pettapiece credited the club's
successful season last year to a
number of dedicated parents and
volunteers. The new Hurricanes
staff is made up many of those for-
mer volunteers.
Because of the i'xtensive time
demands, hired coaching staff is a
common theme in swimming clubs
across the country, especially in
western provinces like Alberta.
"Ontario really has to take a step
to change things and I'm glad we're
one of the first to be doing that,"
Pettapiece said.
"I'm really pumped. We've just
started into practising and already
you can see a different atmos-
phere."
An extensive 40 -week fundrais-
ing campaign is in the works to
help offset the club's costs. Pool
rental alone costs $500 per week.
Just over 50 swimmers are cur-
rently registered with the
Hurricanes, but Pettapiece said
she is expecting that number to
rise to about 90 by the Nov. 7 cut-
off date.
New swimmers are welcome to
come out for a two-week free trial,
before registering. For more infor-
mation contact Pettapiece at 236-
7158.
Looking forward to the 2005-06
season, Pettapiece predicted it
would be "one of our best years
ever."
"Just because we're small doesn't
mean we can't be mighty," she
added.
A handful of swimmers will be
attending their first meet on Oct. 8
in Simcoe and the club will host its
first meet of the year on Oct. 30 at
the Maitland Recreation Centre in
Goderich.
