As well as working with Luann Taylor, a breast cancer survivor who began the carnation bouquet fundraiser, Jewitt also worked with Jean deJong, former owner of Flower Magic who died of breast cancer sev- eral years ago. Huron East researches shocking the lagoon Huron East council is not prepared just yet to commit to a costly procedure, to reduce the sludge at the lagoon near the waste water dis- posal plant. The procedure is called mini shocking, and will cost $4,600. A chemical called Shactivate is dumped into the lagoon and mixes with the sludge at the bottom, essen- tially 'eating up" the sludge. The same pro- cedure was used on the lagoon last September. The results, according to Public Works Coordinator John Forrest, were quite good. When they began the treat- ment, the sludge in the lagoon measured at an average of 18 inches. Seven months later the levels had lowered to around 10 inch- es, but not in the inlet of the lagoon. "There's still a fair amount of sludge," says Forrest, about the levels in the inlet. If the process works the town of Seaforth will be saving a sig- nificant amount of money. Otherwise, they will have to have the sludge cleaned out, which Forrest says is a lengthy job. "It would hundreds thousands," Forrest. Council asked Forrest to speak with other municipalities, mainly Bluewater, who have been using the shock treat- ment for quite some time. Forrest will make another presentation to council next meeting. cost of says has Kendra Jewitt, of Blooms 'n Rooms in Seaforth, Anjanette Carter-McAsh, of Cooke's Florists in Clinton, Natalie Kerslake-Willert, of Village Vines in Exeter and Luann Taylor, of Luann's Country Flowers and Gifts in Blyth are donating $5 from every bouquet of camations to the Canadian Cancer Society. "I did my high school co-op with Jean. She was a great person," says Jewitt. Four Huron County florists will donate $5 of each $18.99 carnation bouquet they sell during Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October towards the Huron County breast screening clinic in Goderich. Along with Jewitt and Taylor, Cooke's Florist in Clinton and Village Vines in Exeter will be par- ticipating. Jewitt says she particularly likes how the bouquet includes informa- tion on breast cancer prevention including a pamphlet instructing how to do self-examination and a pamphlet on mammography. "Everybody should be checking, not just women over 50. There needs to be more awareness," she says. One in nine women will be diag- nosed with the disease and early detection increases the chances of survival. Taylor is aiming to involve every florist in Huron County in next year's fundraiser for breast cancer.
