GIMEMEMED
Catholics from
Mitchell and area were
informed of their
future last week dur-
ing regular masses,
and both St. Vincent de
Paul in Mitchell and
St. Brigid's in
Kennicott (Logan) are
two of a number of
churches in Huron -
Perth slated to close by
2008.
Fr. Alan Dufraimont
made the announce-
ment Sunday to
parishioners in both
Mitchell and St.
Patrick's in Dublin,
while Fr. Peter Keller
made the announce-
ment at St. Brigid's.
Although thriving in
Mitchell, where the
number of registered
families is approxi-
mately 200, the physi-
cal church building of
St. Vincent de Paul is
too small to sustain
them. The close prox-
imity of other churches
within one-half hour's
drive also makes *the
moves a "practical"
one, said Fr. Keller
Monday.
There are just 63
registered families at
St. Brigid's, which has
been clustered with St.
Patrick's in Kinkora for
some time, led by Fr.
Keller.
Under the new
parish reorganization
plan, two priests will
serve three remaining
churches: St. Patrick's
in Dublin, St. Patrick's
in Kinkora and St.
James in Seaforth.
Clinton's St. Joseph is
also listed for closure.
"Like any other
major change, some
will have seen these
changes coming," said
Denise Dalton, region-
al coordinator for
Huron -Pert h
Deaneries.
"We realize it's a dif-
ficult time for every-
one, but by working
together there's cer-
tainly hope for the
future," she said.
Fr. Keller, also epis-
copal vicar for Huron -
Perth Deanery, said
what happens to the
church buildings in
both Mitchell and
Logan is up to the
parishioners.
Fr. Keller said the
recommendation make
things clearer for the
parishioners at St.
Brigid's, "who have for
so long been threat-
ened by closure."
He noted that the
church steeple was not
allowed to be put back
up at St. Brigid's "and
now they know why."
Fr. Keller praised the
message from Bishop

learn church could close by 2008
Ronald Fabbro saying
this plan will best
serve all Catholics in
the diocese, not just in
the local deanery.
"We're all intercon-
nected here - we're all
in this together," he
said. "The real work
begins once this
[churches are closed] is
done."
The parish reorgani-
zation policy provides
criteria of minimum
parish size, accessibili-
ty, availability of
priests to celebrate
mass and financial via-
bility.
In announcing the
recommendations in
Mitchell, Fr.
Dufraimont noted that
within one-half hour of
St. Vincent de Paul,
there are six Catholic
churches.
Fr. Keller noted that
Bishop Fabbro hopes to
attend the final closure
masses at each church,
making for a busy
schedule, which
alludes to the drawn-
out nature of the
process to June of
2008.
There are approxi-
mately 17,850
Catholics served by 22
parish churches in
Huron -Perth Deanery
of the Roman Catholic
Diocese of London. The
recommendations
would bring the num-
ber of parish churches
to 12.
A period of rflection
and consultation with-
in parishes will take
place in early October,
then the Deanery
Implementation Team
will gather input from
parish leadership in
their groups, a press
release from the
Diocese of London said.
Final recommenda-
tions for presentation
will be conducted by
the end of this
December, then Bishop
Fabro will announce
his final decisions by
May of 2006.

ENTRY
This gabled four-bedroom home combines the one-story convenience of a
rancher with the old-fashioned charm of an Arts and Crafts bungalow.
Unique touches include a fountain in the foyer, which is lit by a skylight.
Entry is up three steps. Immediately to the left is an enclosed space
designed for parcel drop-off, and beyond that a capacious coat closet. The
study is to the right, and beyond are stairs leading to the basement. Beyond
the skylit foyer fountain are the living room and formal dining room, both
with access to a generous terrace at the back of the home. The dining room
boasts a built-in buffet and is separated from the kitchen by double doors.
On the kitchen side of these doors is an unusual feature, a butler's pantry,
designed for storing the "best" dishes, cutlery, glasses and liquor, and
easing entertaining chores.
