Bill Feeney, of Staffa, qualifies to
plow at Canadian championships
Pulling the plow as slowly
as possible is the secret to the
perfect furrow, said 16 -year-
old Bill Feeney, of Staffa,
junior champion tractor
plowperson at last week's
International Plowing Match
(IPM) near Listowel.
"Patience is the winning
ingredient - it takes a lot of
patience to keep it straight
and make sure everything's
level," he said Monday.
Feeney, son of Francis and
Glenda Feeney and a student
at St. Michael Secondary
School in Stratford, plowed
using a two -furrow plow in
the group born 1986-1989.
His grandfather, also Bill
Feeney, from the Dublin area,
coached his grandson for the
past six years. This was the
16-year-old's first year to
plow on his own - no coach
allowed.
Feeney said he's learned a
lot over the years from a
number of different coaches.
He said it's through trial and

error and the experience of
older farmers that he's
learned to identify a perfect
furrow.
"The furrows have to be
standing upright and you
have to see every individual
furrow. You learn it from
tinkering around while you
practise," he said.
Feeney is now eligible to
compete next spring at the

Chilliwack, B.C.
"I'm going to have to plow
as much as possible this fall
before the snow comes
because there's nothing you
can do to.practise while the
snow is on the ground," he
said.
Feeney also holds the
