Alliance
Alliance rated a 'high performer'
in provincial hospital studies
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
The Huron Perth Hospital Alliance's status as a "high
performer" in provincial reports on emergency departments
and acute care services was celebrated at Seaforth's Local
Advisory Committee (LAC) on Monday.
"It's a real testament to our staff to score as high as we have
again," said Alliance CEO Andrew Williams during the
meeting.
The Alliance was centred out as one of nine "high
performing hospitals" in the provincial emergency department
study because it met "high performer" criteria for two of the
four areas studied.
The Alliance scored above average in four out of four
sections in patient satisfaction and above average in two of
four sections in financial performance.
Other areas studied include system integration and change,
where the Alliance scored above average in "use of clinical
information technology," one of five areas rated and clinical
utilization and outcomes, where the Alliance scored above
average in "rate of ankle x-ray," one of four areas studied.
In the acute care study, the Alliance was listed as a high
performer in the patient satisfaction area, one of five topics
explored, including system integration and change, clinical
utilization and outcomes, financial performance and condition
and women's health perspective.
Once again, the Alliance was above average in use of
clinical information technology in the system integration and
change category.
It scored average in all three areas studied in the clinical
utilization and outcomes, and average in two areas studied in
women's health perspective.
Williams said as the Alliance participates in the provincial
studies year after year, trends can be detected and the four
member hospitals of the Alliance can use the information to
find areas of improvement.
"We always score well on patient satisfaction and that
reconfirms what we're doing and sends a message to the
community about what people are saying about our service,"
he said.
He added that the reports do not allow hospitals to compare
how they're doing in comparison with each other but are better
used as an "internal tool."
"In areas where we are not a high performer, we can look at
the things we need to do to improve," he said.
Seaforth Alliance representative Dick Burgess said he was
"quite impressed by the results."
"In customer satisfaction, we rate very high compared to the
rest," he said.
Fuel price instability puts road work
on hold on Seaforth's Main Street
By Jeff Heuchert
Expositor Staff
The instability of fuel and
'oil prices are taking a toll on
local government.
Plans for a new watermain
under Seaforth's Main
Street, have been put on
hold and the high price of
fuel is the reason.
Public Works coordinator
John Forrest told council last
week that this is no longer a
good time to go ahead with
the project.
The existing watermain is.
around 50 years old, and
runs from down Main Street
from Goderich Street to
Welsh Street.
This is the second time
they've pushed the
completion date back. The
work was initially to be
completed in November, but
the contractors were too
busy, and changed the
finishing date to June.
The high price of fuel
directly relates to the
equipment that will be used
on the job, such as trucks
and backhoes.
Under the same contract,
Huron County will be
putting in new storm drains,
re -doing the curbs, and
laying new asphalt, along
the north end of Main Street.
A major component in
asphalt is petroleum, another
reason why the project has
become too pricey.
With these costs, BM
Ross, the company doing the
work, could not bid the job
fairly.
Project Supervisor at BM
Ross Dennis Elliot says
delaying the work is only
fair.
"There's no urgency in the
job," he says.
Forrest says the town will
look into the project again in
February, once fuel and oil
prices have hopefully
dropped.
As for BM Ross, the high
costs of production hasn't
effected any of their smaller
tenders.

Panic over
anticipated
spike in gas
prices causes
line-ups
From Page 1
Huron OPP stopped by at
various times through the
evening to help direct traffic
because of the line-ups.
Martin says she sees how
the rising gas prices are
affecting,her customers.
"People are worried. A lot
are wondering how they're
going to be able to afford
going to work. And, when
they heard the prices was
going to go through the roof,
they just panicked," she says.
