HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2005-09-21, Page 1010 - September 21, 2005 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR Invasive plants topic of meeting Seaforth Horticultural Society Seaforth and District Horticultural Society met Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Northside United Church with 25 in attendance. Eleanor Horst introduced the speaker, Rhea Hamilton - Seeger who spoke on invasive plants in our gardens. Some invasive plants are Tansy, gout weed, periwinkle, golden. rod, creeping Jenny, Lamium, Virginia Creeper. She had planted them in her garden and they had taken over. Some have pretty flowers which she hated to pull out. Eleanor thanked Rhea and presented her with a cheque. Janny Streutker then took the chair and welcomed everyone. Beatrice Stoll read the minutes of the June meeting and told that we had Rachel Fournier as our ambassador of the fair. Dilys Finnigan gave the treasurer's report. Janny read a letter from Margaret Atchison, our flower show judge, telling us how pleased she was to be asked. Nancy Kale reported on Ciderfest on Sept. 25. She has a booth but wants helpers, plants, baking and produce to be in by 10 a.m. Ruth Smith reported on a meeting held in Mildmay, Sept. 7 asking if District 8 would host the Convention in 2007. We are to let them know by Oct. 10. A vote was taken and we all agreed to help. Heather McLean reported on the bus trip July 13 to Cullen Gardens. Forty-seven went. She had some pictures which we all enjoyed. There is a board meeting on Oct. 29 in Durham. Janny attended the convention in North Bay on Aug. 12-14 and 500 people attended. Insurance was a hot topic. She showed an African Violet that can be purchased. Information on Emerald Ash Borer was passed around. Door prizes were won by Betty McLean, Mona Stackhouse, Brenda McIntosh and Heather McLean. Delphine Dolmage and Olave Little served lunch. Visitors from B.C. see Winthrop family Winthrop The title of Sunday's sermon at Cavan United Church was "Beginning at the End" based on Matthew 20. In the absence of Rev. John, Don and Maja Dodds and Susan and Stephanie MacDonald were in charge of the service. Greeters were Susan and Stephanie and, collectors were Don and Stephanie. Rev. John was kept overnight. in hospital. We wish him good health for his upcoming wedding this weekend. Bob and Ruth Campbell visited with Beatrice Campbell on Friday evening. Visiting relatives in the area are Gordon and Helen Bettles of B.C. These include Glen and Marg McClure, Olive Betties, Gary, Paul and Lorraine Bettles. The Project Team is anticipating the need to develop an adult education program for groups which may be required as part of an expected planning process considered in proposed legislation. The Curriculum Writer would work with our communications team to develop the curriculum program which will include translating technical material. in development into easily - understood educational materials and activities.
