Huron Expositor, 2005-09-14, Page 15Sports Seaforth novice lawn bowlers bring home provincial silver By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Seaforth bowlers came home Sunday with a silver medal in the provincial novice championships held in Hanover over the weekend. Rick Wood and Keith Snell, both of Seaforth and Brad Claus, of Exeter, competed for the second year in the novice provincials, held for bowlers with five years or less experience lawn bowling. "Last year was the first year we entered and we only made it to the first day last year," says Wood. "We're really excited to win the silver this year." Wood has three years' experience lawn bowling while Claus has four and Snell has five. "We'll have to pick another novice (to replace Snell) from Seaforth next year when we go back," says Wood. submitted photo Brad Claus, of Exeter, Rick Wood and Keith Snell, both of Seaforth, returned from the novice provincial lawn bowling championships in Hanover with silver medals. After qualifying for the provincials m the district, the Seaforth team won five out of six games, only losing to Orangeville for the gold medal game. "We were satisfied to get as far as we did. We were outbowled in the final game," he says. Teams Seaforth beat were from Willowdale, Burlington, Ottawa and Kitchener. Twelve greens in play at Thelma Coombs Memorial tournament The Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club held the annual Legion Branch 156 Tournament Sunday Sept. 4 with a good entry. First place went to Lee Ryan and Carol Carter of Seaforth. Second was Chuck and Cathy Townsend of London and third Jack and Marie Muir of the home club. Consolation went to Dave Ducklow and Audrey Hepburn. Sunday, Sept. 11 was the annual "Thelma Coombs Memorial" tournament sponsored by Thelma's family and 12 greens were in play. In first place was Fred Tilley and Diane March with gime wins followed by Chuck Seaforth Lawn llowling and Cathy Townsend of London with Lee Ryan and Carol Carter third. Prizes for the tournament were turkeys and Erich and Joyce Matzold were two game winners. Bowling in the Provincial Novice trebles finals on Saturday and Sunday saw Seaforth's entry of Rick Wood, Keith Snell and Brad Claus of Exeter win the silver medal for district 4. In out-of-town tournaments Aug. 30 at Stratford R.B.C. trebles Rick Wood bowling with Glen and Glenns Keene of Stratford won first prize, while Jack and Marie Muir and Manan Smith were third. Saturday, Sept. 3 at Clinton at the 1st Elmer Murray Memorial Tournament saw Jack and Marie Muir win third and Erich and Joyce Matzold fourth. Elmer was a familiar figure at local bowling greens for many years.
