"We usually have Charolais and I expect they'll be back next
year. The higher prices will bring people back," said Bennett.
Sales at the pork auction were also 20 per cent higher than
usual.
Bennett said he was very impressed that Epcor, the company
building wind turbines in Port Albert, came to the fair and bought
a steer to donate to the Seaforth food bank.
"It's a new corporate sponsor putting down roots in Huron
County?' he said.
Angeline Swart of the Seaforth food bank, said she is very
excited and surprised by the donation of close to 740 pounds of
beef.
"It'll be a real treat. We're going to get roasts and stuff, not just
plain old hamburger as usual. It's prime meat. People are going to
love this," she said.
She said the food bank will also be benefitting well from the
food bank donations brought by fairgoers as admission to the
annual fair.
"The donation was really well advertised this year and people
came through," she said.

competing in beef

As the oldest living past president of the Seaforth
Agricultural Society, Joe Devereaux remembers fairs that were
a lot bigger and better attended, both by fairgoers and
volunteers, than last weekend's fall fair.
But, he's not sure if those days can ever be repeated.
"It's a changed world and there aren't the volunteers around
to get. People don't take the same interest," he says.
Devereaux was honoured this year, along with a number of
other Agricultural Society past presidents and ladies' division
past presidents, as the fall fair celebrated its 160th anniversary.
He and Dorothy Hays, the oldest living past president of the
ladies' division were featured in the fall fair parade with a ride
in a convertible, the first time Devereaux has been in the parade
since he was president.
He remembers getting involved in the fair when a neighbour
volunteered Devereaux's name to help out in the beef
committees when he was 18.
"He put my name in and I just followed along," he says.
He stayed involved and ended up working his way to
president by 1975, a fair he remembers with a big midway,
many livestock entries and horse races.
"We charged admission is those days and there were big
crowds on the midway. All the events were packed," he says.
As well, he says the Agricultural Society used to hold many
dances year-round, many of them at Cardno's Hall.
As a farmer, Devereaux has always showed his cattle in the
fair and has "a bunch" of ribbons at home to prove it.
"I like how fairs get a lot of people together and I like the
competition. You work hard all year and it's nice to see how
your work does, how it stacks up with the others. Every year 1
tried my best," he says.
After showing himself, he also helped his children and his
grandchildren show their own calves.
And, the beef show is something he still never misses.
"I have judged before and I still like to watch the shows. I'm
usually pretty close to the judge and of course. everyone has his
own opinion," he laughs.
