Seaforth Sea Lions win first
place trophy for first time ever
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
Seaforth's swim team, the
Sea Lions, has won the first
prize trophy for the summer
swim meet season of the
Inter -County Swimming
Association, for the first time
ever.
With 287 points, Seaforth
beat Stratford, which had 264
points, Exeter, which had
236, Mitchell at 195,
Lucknow at 68, Lucan at 64,
Clinton at 63, Kirkton at 59
and St. Marys at 54. All of
the pools are in Huron and
Perth Counties.
Lifeguard Julie Phillips
attributed the win to the
biggest swim team Seaforth
has ever had with 35
swimmers, double in size
from last year's team of 17.
After last year's finish in
third, the lifeguards set a goal
to win the first place trophy
this year.
"The coaches put a lot
more into it this year. We
really worked hard we
recruited," she said, adding
that if they saw a good
swimmer at Lions Pool's
recreation swim, they would
invite that child to join the
team.
But, while strong
swimmers are great, she said
the main goal is to get as
many kids involved as
possible.
"All the kids learn a lot. We
work with them and they
improve a lot over the
summer," she said.
As well, she said the team
was able to attract older
swimmers for the first time
with competitors from age 12
to 16.
She said Stratford, Mitchell
and Exeter usually win the
trophy and also usually have
the Largest teams.
