Susan Hundertmark photo Cemetery software will ease access to genealogical info By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor A cemetery program that will allow easy access to historical and genealogical information throughout Huron East's cemeteries will be purchased by the municipality. The three cemeteries run by Huron East, including Brussels, Cranbrook and Mount Pleasant, have approximately 9,000 interments and Deputy -Clerk Brad Knight told council that volunteers receive two to three calls a week enquiring about geneological information. "The cemetery boards are really supportive but it's a time consuming process to look it up now," said Knight. Information about Huron East's three municipal cemeteries are all stored manually in one location and Knight said putting the data on computer would be a useful backup. "If something happened, it wouldn't be good," he said. The cemetery software emphasizes the retention of historical and genealogical data, maps the cemeteries and includes features such as digital photos of all the stones. Grey Coun. Mark Beaven said he is amazed at the amount of time volunteers spend answering requests from the public. "They do feel obligated to do it and my biggest concern is burnout for the volunteers. Then, it becomes a municipal staff responsibility," said Beaven. Knight suggested that other cemeteries in the municipality might also be interested in having their historical data stored by the municipality. "It's going to he a selling tool for the whole municipality if we have access to this information at a moment's notice. The non - municipal cemeteries may see a benefit and they would pay for their costs," added Beaven. "I can see a benefit to local churches and cemeteries," said McKillop Coun. Ferg Kelly. "We do have a lot of cemeteries," said McKillop Coun. Sharon McClure. • "And, they're going to get bigger," laughed Mayor Joe Seili. Deputy -Mayor Bernie MacLellan pointed out that Huron East will become known for its genealogical information. "Next, we're going to advertise: come to our municipality and find out software which relative died here," he said. Quoted `It's a time consuming process to look it up now,' Huron East Deputy Clerk Brad Knight ward reserves mapping. As well, he said the $9,250 software package is being offered to Huron East at Last year's price of $7,500. Knight said close to 15 acres have to be mapped at the three cemeteries at a cost of $200 an acre. He said $2,500 to $3,000 could be taken from the Brussels and Grey to pay for the THE HURON EXPOSITOR, September 7, 2005 - 7 Dorothy Hays honoured during fall fair parade The last time Dorothy Hays was in the Seaforth fall fair parade, she was a schoolgirl walking with classmates from Seaforth Public School. • This Friday, she'll be riding in style in a convertible, honoured, at 89, as the oldest living past president of the ladies' division of the fair as the Seaforth fair celebrates its 160th anniversary. Hays was president of homecrafts for the Seaforth Agricultural Society from 1970-72 and is still known to enter exhibits in the fair. "I've put as many as 50 entries in at a time when I was young and foolish in jams, jellies and baking. I can't do that anymore but I'm putting in three flower entries this year," she says. Hays, a retired nurse, got involved in the Seaforth fair when she was invited by a friend and fellow nurse to come to a meeting. Much to her surprise, she left the meeting as that year's president after none of the women on the executive felt ready to fill the job. "I'd never entered anything in the fair before - I'd looked at what everyone else did but never done it myself. But, I got talked into being chair by my friend who said she'd help me," she says. At the time, it was a two-day fair and Hays describes the job as "taking meetings, seeing that things get done." "It was at fair time you did your work. In winter you didn't do much but hold a few card parties to keep interest up," she says. And, she says she's helped clean the roundhouse, where all of the exhibits are displayed, many times. "I've scrubbed every inch of that roundhouse over the years," she says. Hays says it was easier to find volunteers during the 1970s, both to enter their work in the fair and to help organize the event, than it is now. "If it wasn't for people like Ross Ribey and Lyle Haney, we wouldn't be having a fair. But, if you put effort behind it, it won't die out," she says. And, Hays continues to do as much as she can, selling tickets and donating prizes for the annual penny sale. "I just like the whole thing. I thoroughly enjoy the fair;" she says. During Friday's parade, she'll be enjoying it again from the the passenger's seat in a convertible. 'They told me I should get my queen's wave going," she laughs.
