Kippen Gun Club trying to attract youngsters
Trap and skeet shooting promotes self-discipline, responsibility and hand -eye coordination
By Swan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
During its final shoot of
the season, the Kippen gun
club rolled out the red carpet
for junior shooters to create
some enthusiasm for trap
and skeet shooting among
youth.
"We've got to get the
young kids involved to keep
the sport going," says club
president Jamie Caldwell. "If
we don't the sport will just
fade away."
Ben Hovius, 13, who
started the sport two years
ago, says he likes the
powerful feeling of a gun in
his hands.
"It was fun the first time -
I hit about 11 of the 25
targets. My typical score
now is 14 - I'm not really
accurate at all yet but I like
shooting the targets," he
says.
Jake Hormuth. 15, says he
got his hunting licence at age
13 and shooting at the gun
club helps him develop his
hunting skills.
"When I started the gun
was bigger than me and T felt
very proud to hit my first
target," he says.
"It's a lot of fun. You meet
a lot of new people," says
Hormuth.
Shelby Dow, 14, of
Hanover, says she likes trap
shooting because she likes
competing with her brother
and beating him.
"Most of the time I'm
better than my brother. If I
concentrate and take my
time, I can get 25 (a perfect
score)," she says.
Raised around guns in a
family of hunters, Dow says
she enjoys hunting and shot
her first deer last year.
Dan Butson, 14, says he
likes the challenge of
shooting as well as the time
he spends with his dad at the
gun club.
"This is a good time for
him and I to be together,"
says his dad Al.
Dan says he got very
excited the first time he shot
a perfect round of 25.
"With this sport, I can say
I'm good at something. It
makes me feel like one of
the big guys," he says.
Dan says trap shooting is
his favourite because he has
an easier time hitting the
targets.
Al says he likes the way
shooting helps . his son
develop self-discipline and
concentration.
"It gives kids a sense of
responsibility. They've got a
firearm in their hands and
while it can be dangerous, it
can also be fun," he says,
adding that gun safety
courses go hand-in-hand
with the sport.
Caldwell says shooting
helps young people develop
responsibility and
sportsmanship. and hand -eye

coordination.
"Young and old, male and •
female - they can all be good
at this sport. It's a great
family sport," he says.

Carol Carter captures
third gold medal in
national lawn bowling
By Andy Bader
Mitchell Advocate Editor
Carol Carter, of the
Seaforth Lawn Bowling
Club, captured her third
gold medal at the Canadian
Lawn Bowling
championships in Kitchener
Aug. 20 - but this time she
had fewer teammates to
celebrate with.
Carter, who by her own
admission began bowling
with her father more than
four decades ago, won the
2005 pairs event, sharing
the championship with
Maureen Thompson, a
London resident.
Her previous two gold
medal performances were
with her ladies fours
teammates, once in 1999
and again last year. along
with a silver in 2000.
But Cartdr and
Thompson, both members
of the Seaforth Lawn
Bowling Club, qualified for
the nationals in pairs after
capturing the provincial
title held in early July in
Burlington.
When the two bowled
together at the Ontario
championship they won
four straight games and
took gold, making them
Ontario's #1 women's
doubles team in the
Canadian championship.
"It was a great week," she
said last Wednesday,
reflecting on the
championship in between
games of the mixed pairs
tournament held at the
Mitchell lawn bowling
greens.
Carter and Thompson
finished second in round-
robin action with a 6-2
record in eight pool games,
qualifying them for the gold
medal match against
previously undefeated
British Columbia.
In the final, Ontario 1
(there were two Ontario
entries in the nine -team
field) fought back from an
early deficit and turned
around what looked like a
bad end midway through
the match with a stunning
takeout by Thompson to
steal one and give their
team some momentum en
route to a 15-10 victory in
the 18 -end game and the
championship.
"At this level, you can't
really have a bad end," she
remarked. "It was awesome
to pull it out."
Carter, who teaches piano
in Seaforth, said she and
Thompson never bowled
together all summer to
prepare for nationals, they
just simply bowled often to
hone their skills.
One difference she noted
in the pairs title and the
ladies fours event was the
number of bowls each team
member gets to throw,
which made it more
challenging.
"You're in the game all
the time this way," she said.
"You've got to watch all the
time."
Carter said she's like to
praise the efforts of
manager Dennis Schmidt,
of Goderich, who helped
guide them through the
nationals.
She's aiming to return to
the national stage in 2006,
but again with her ladies
fours team
