Seaforth brothers dominate
Tyson Tour juvenile division
By Jennifer Hubbard
Clinton News -Record Staff
Some of the province's best
young golfers - including
eight area teens - were in
Clinton last week competing
in the Junior Tyson Tour.
Woodlands Links Golf
Course hosted 90 golfers in
"the hottest junior golf tour in
Canada," on Aug. 17 - a first
for any course in Huron
County.
Todd Delmage, the
Canadian Professional
Golfers' Association (CPGA)
pro at Woodlands, said he
pushed to bring the tour to
Clinton so that local youth
would have a chance to
participate.
"I really wanted to get
something around here for the
kids to play in. They always
end up driving to London or
Sarnia," he explained.
"If they see what it's about
closer to home, maybe they'll
want to play a little more."
Seaforth brothers Curtis
and David Bennett dominated
the juvenile boys division
(ages 14-16) in the local
tournament, tying for first
place with a score of 72.
Junior (age 17-18) Brad
Henderson (Seaforth) shot a
77 to tie for 7th, while Justin
Vere (Clinton) placed 13th in
juvenile with a score of 83.
Juvenile Brock Spencer and
bantam Austin Spencer, both
of Clinton, scored 79 and 94,
respectively. Brock tied for
ninth and Austin placed 12th.
Delmage said he was very
impressed with the
tournament's success and
praised the young golfers for
their skill and etiquette.
He also noted the local
event featured seven female
golfers, with the division
winner shooting an
impressive score of 79.
"A lot of tour participants
go on to be CPGA pros at
courses, course
superintendents and have
pretty good amateur
careers,"said Delmage, who
played on the tour 1982-1986.
Points are tallied from each
golfer's top six events to
determine the overall winner
in each division at the end of
the season. Fifty points are
awarded for a first place
finish. Every golfer receives
at least 33 points for
participating in an event.
Registration for the tour is
free, but a portion of the $38
fee for each event is used to
create a scholarship for
division winners.
Founded by London Free
Press reporter Bev Tyrell
almost 40 years ago, the
Tyson tour boasts its highest
membership ever in 2005 at
475.
"It started in 1968 with just
four events and now it has 16
events with 475 kids as
members. It was one of the
first organized tours of its
kind around," Delmage
explained.
"Tournaments are held all
over southwestern Ontario,
averaging at least 100 kids
per tournament. Some are
even filled to capacity at 144
right away."
After a successful inaugural
year, Delmage said he is
hoping that Woodlands will
become an annual stop on the
Tyson tour.
Anyone interested in being
part of next year's tour can
register online at
www.juniortysontour.com.
Golfers must be betwegn 10-
18 years of age as of Aug. 31,
2006.
"It's a great development
tour for kids that are looking
to get better at golf and
looking towards a career in
the sport," Delmage added.
