More than 300 family members
gather at Cemetery Sunday
Over 300 family members,
relatives, neighbours and friends
gathered at the St. Columban
cemetery to remember and celebrate
(tilt i1
all those who have died and are buried there.
In celebrating the Eucharist, Father Joseph Hardy reminded
those present of the strong faith held by their Irish ancestors
buried here, who came toSether in community to worship even
before there were building to do so. He reminded them of the
Dutch people and other immigrants who left the security of their
homeland to start a new life and practice their faith here in spite
of many hardships. All were encouraged to carry their cross as
Jesus did.
Altar servers were Kim Murray, Ian and Randy Murray, and
Bridget O'Reilly. Joanne Melady served as commentator.Gerry
and Nancy O'Reilly were greeters and gift bearers. The reader
was Frank Crowley. The ushers were Dan Nolan, Gerry Ryan,
Don Cronin and Ken Coyne. Gilbert Vansteelandt. Marie
Feeney, Karen Ryan and Kevin Kale served as extraordinary
ministers of Communion.
The choir was accompanied by Mary Jane Willemse on
keyboard and Amanda Ryan on the violin. Terry Kelly managed
the sound system.
The St. Columban Cemetery Board is to be commended for
the great effort put forth to ensure the smooth running of this
annual event. Described as a great family reunion, a social time
of visiting and reminiscing was enjoyed by all.
While summer is nearly over, and the young people are
preparing for a return to classes, there has been much activity
this summer for many local people.
Kevin and Nancy Kale enjoyed a trip to Newfoundland.
Flying into St. John's, they toured the Avalon Peninsula on the
east side. Describing the scenery as rugged, they enjoyed the
very friendly and hospitable people as they toured, enjoying the
local bed and breakfast places.
They participated in some whale watching, attended a Folk
Festival in St. John's, which included a wide variety of music,
and participated in a "walk around" pageant in Trinity which
took in different areas of the town, and told the story of the hard
life endured by the islanders and their main occupation as
fishermen.
Setting out on his blue Honda Valkrie, Neil Murray,
accompanied by Miles Little, took a tour to Sturges, South
Dakota, to attend the world's largest bike rally. the four-day trip
was great, especially because there was no rain.
This bike rally attracts as many as a half million motorcycles
and is an exhibition where one can enjoy such huge
entertainment as Tim McGraw, see demonstrations, meet with
the manufacturers, look at the other bikes, and meet many
people from all over the place.
A biker from Cape Breton travelled with them for part of the
way. The men also got to see the famous Mount Rushmore,
which is within a few miles of the bike rally.

Cronin in St. Columban. Family members, relatives, neighbours
and friends gathered to enjoy a barbecue and social time
together, but also to celebrate with Frank on the occasion of his
80th birthday. Cake and candles were enjoyed by all.
Devan Burke spent a few months this summer hiking and
backpacking through England and Ireland. He also visited
Holland and France, enjoyed the sounds and sights in Rome and
Italy, took in a bullfight in Spain, but especially enjoyed the
Cliffs of Moir in Ireland.
Kailyn Burke has spent the summer as a nanny with a family
in the south of England, near Brighton, and has loved every
minute of it.
Marie and Bill Feeney have returned from a motor tour
around Lake Michigan. They started out by travelling to
Wheaton, Hlinois, to attend the wedding of Tom Wheatley, son
of Larry and Susan Wheatley.
While there, they attended the 75th Anniversary mass of St.
Irene's Church in Wheaton. It was called a "Polka Mass"
because all the music was sang in a polka style.
They then travelled to Milwaukee, to visit the gravesite of
Marie's relative, Father Stephen Eckert, who.is buried there after
spending his whole life working among the black people in that
area.
They toured St. Benedict of the Moor Church at the gravesite
of Father Stephen Eckert. Before coming home, they travelled to
Frankenmuth, Michigan, and visited the famous Christmas
Store.
Tom and Joanne Melady and other members of the Melady
family have returned from an enjoyable vacation at a cottage on
Lake Nippising near North Bay.
Joe and Paula Ryan, Brent, Megan and Erin, travelled from
Winnipeg earlier this summer to visit with his parents and
