August 24, 2005 News Walton woman wins gold at regional seniors' games By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor Joan Perrie, of Walton, has become an expert on predicting how fast she can walk three kilometres. The secret of how she won the gold medal at the Southwestern Ontario Regional Seniors Games last Wednesday in Windsor recently lies in a song. "When I walk, I sing Camptown Races. I walk to the beat and close to my fastest pace. It just works," she laughs. As well, she practises twice a week and times herself. Perrie completed the event in 29 minutes, 39 seconds, half a minute faster than she predicted. "It was a fast walk. It was a bicycle path through the sculpture park along the Detroit River," she says. With 45 people at the starting line, 30 of them competing in the women's event, Perrie says she wondered how they would all fit on an eight -foot -wide path. But, she positioned herself behind a man who was walking lall THE HURON -PERTH CATHOLIC ___ DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD STUDENT REGISTRATION JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN -GRADE 12 Parents of Catholic school age children who are new to Perth and Huron Counties may contact their local school and register their children during )he week of August 29 to September 2 2005 or on the second day of school. Because the event is a predicted walk, Perrie says speed is not a factor and some athletes were using canes and wheelchairs. "Anyone can win because it's prediction," she says. Perrie has also won the predicted swimming event in the local senior games and last year won a bronze medal in 55-64 year-old 200 -metre prediction swim at Activefest, the provincial Seniors' Games. Other Seaforth seniors who competed in Windsor include Olave Little who competed in golf and Edith Walker, who also competed in the prediction walk. Neither of them placed in the top four. She says District 29, which includes the Seaforth area, did very well in the provincial games with seven firsts and one third out of 10 competing districts. "We had a great time. People are always so friendly. I'm hoping more Seaforth seniors sign up next year," says Perrie. "Why don't we have any tennis players, dart players or more swimmers," she says. Lawn bowling grants will pay for new equipment By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Editor A grant from the Trillium Foundation for $11,000 will be added to $9,245 from the Seaforth Community Development Trust and $6,500 from the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club to buy new equipment to maintain Seaforth's greens. "All of our stuff is outdated and we should have been replacing pieces as we go," says Rick Wood, president of the local lawn bowling club. Lawn bowling equipment that will be replaced include a new roller at $9,000, a new mower at $8,000, a dethatcher at $2,400, a drag mat at $2,100 and a backlapper at $900. Wood says some of the equipment being replaced could be considered antiques, including a 1929 roller. "As the equipment gets older, it gets tougher to find the parts. We're lucky our greenskeeper Fred Tilley has been so mechanically - inclined. But, even he can only tinker with them so much," adds Donna Beuerman, another member L r I 1 r—i 'T•r ■ t , OF THE WEEK • "YOUR f FP/QYA. TION Ali12 ficPmE SPECIL4 LISTS! Wood and Beuerman agree that Seaforth's greens have a great reputation throughout Ontario and are remarked upon by bowlers as far away as Hamilton, Kitchener and Sarnia. "Having such good greens is part of our draw. We try to keep them in good shape. We're noted for that," says Wood. Beuerman adds that a Woodstock bowler asked why Seaforth wasn't considered to host the Canadians since Seaforth has such good greens. "Greens -wise we'd be able to take it on but we might not be able to accommodate all the people who'd come," she says. Keith Snell, who helps Tilley with the groundskeeping, says the new equipment will simplify the job quite a bit. While watering the greens currently takes six hours with the watering machine and another hour and a quarter manually with a hose, a new underground automatic system will be far easier. "All you do is push a button," says Snell. Vanastra Curling Club buying ice -making equipment By Jennifer Hubbard Clinton News -Record Staff The Vanastra Curling Club will soon have a big check mark on its to-do list. The club is one of 20 local organizations that was named in a recent press release announcing $675,400 in Ontario Trillium Foundation grants. "We started fundraising for this about two years ago to replace our ice -making equipment and we applied for the grant this past spring," club president Dave Townsend said. Since most of the equipment is at least 20 years old, the $45,000 project is much needed. Money raised at past fundraisers will make up what is not covered by the $15,000 OTF grant. "A lot of the equipment is getting to the age that we can't get parts for it any more and we don't want to have a shut down in the middle of the season," he explained. "The new equipment will also be much more efficient, using at least a third less hydro." Townsend said the club is hoping to have all of the upgrades complete by November when the curling season starts. There are currently about 150 members in the Vanastra club — 90 adult and 60 juniors.
