Going into his third
national competition at
Walton TransCan this
weekend, Tyler Listman, 14,
wants to finish in the top 10.
"My highest ranking was
14th but that
was two
years ago in
the 65cc
class. Last
year, I was
18th in the
85cc class,"
says the
Kinburn-
a r ea
motocross
rider.
Tyler,
who is
entering
Grade 9 at Central Huron
Secondary School this fall,
has been riding in
motocross races since he
was nine years old.
"First, I had a mini -bike
just to ride around here (the
family farm) but I decided I
wanted to ride after seeing a
race at Walton," says Tyler.
His dad Ron agrees that
motocross is a sport both
fathers and sons get
"hooked on."
"We're gone nearly every
weekend. Motocross is what
we do all summer every
summer," he says.

Listmans travel

throughout
Ontario to
places like
B a r r i e,
Tillsonburg,
Paisley, Auburn
and Wheatley,
racing almost
every week.
And, Tyler
is constantly
training, riding
his motocross bike on trails
and jumps built in front of
his house and lifting
weights to build his upper
body and forearm strength
and stamina.
"This is a very demanding
sport and it requires a lot of
discipline. If you want to be
good, you have to train,"
says Ron.
"You wipe out when

you're tired and not
focussed. I notice a
difference when I started
lifting weights this year,"
says Tyler.
"People think you just
jump on .a bike and don't
have to do anything but it's
tougher than hockey," he
adds.
Tyler also plays minor
hockey in the winter, which
he says compliments his
motocross training. But of
the two sports, he says his
first love is still motocross.
Motocross is also a sport
that requires courage and
confidence since wipe-outs
can cause serious injuries.
But, Tyler and his dad say a
rider can't focus on the
possibility of getting hurt.
"I've had bad scrapes and
burns but no broken bones. I
don't really think about
getting hurt," he says.
"You have to be a little
crazy because if you have
any fear, you can't be good
at it," adds Ron.
Ron says a motocross
camp in Chatsworth Tyler
just returned from helped to
boost his confidence.
"I'm best at cornering and
speed but I'm not the best at
jumping. But, I learned how
to do jumps better from the
pros who teach at the
camp," says Tyler.
"It's hard to get the.
confidence to jump when
there are other bikes cutting
you off," says Ron. ,
Tyler won his first
firstplace trophy at a race in
Auburn this summer,
pointing out that he was also
"the most exhausted I've
been," after completing the
race which was held in
pouring rain and in four
inches of mud.
He's excited about this
weekend's national
competition in Walton
where he'll see the pros he
hopes to join someday.
But, his dad confesses it's
becoming harder to watch
the races as Tyler builds up
his confidence and his
speed.
"The faster they go, the
more dangerous it gets and
the harder to watch. When
you can't see the whole
track and Tyler hasn't come
around for awhile, I start to
worry. Then, I just hope he's
stalled the bike," he says.
Todd Doig does the shaving when Ali Maxwell, formerly
known as Hair cuts his hair to raise money for junior golf.
Haircut for junior golf
Ali Maxwell, whose distinctive Afro earned him the
nickname Hair when he joined the junior golf program at
the Seaforth Golf Club, is going to need a new nickname.
Maxwell, inspired to chop his hair off, decided to use the
event to raise money for the youth who participate in junior
golf.
"He came in one day and said he needed a haircut and I
said if you're getting that hair cut you should donate it to
charity," said Seaforth Golf Club owner Cam Doig.
"I said I'd donate it to junior golf," said Maxwell.
Maxwell, who is going into Grade 12 at Central Huron
Secondary School in September, is one of 65 Seaforth-area
kids who golf in the junior golf program.
Doig says that while the golf course is a for-profit
business, the course does not make a profit at junior golf,
subsidizing the cost of an hour-long golf lesson and nine
holes of golf each week for the youth involved.
Maxwell raised close to $3-50.
