Aug 17 2005-3 Huron Habitat for Humanity begins first project Many families apply to become partner family in Huron Habitat's first house in Clinton By Jennifer Hubbard Clinton News -Record Staff What was once an empty lot is now home to a flurry of activity, as Huron's first Habitat for Humanity project takes on a life of its own. Construction at the Clinton Habitat site began late last week, with the installation of water and sewer lines courtesy of VanDriel Excavating Inc. "It really feels good to get this started," project manager Jim Martin said. "I can tell already this is going to be a great project." Martin is a retired building contractor from Goderich. Last month, Central Huron councillors Darren Stevenson and Alison Lobb presented Habitat for Humanity Huron County chairman Paul Dyck with the deed for the Highway 8 lot - across from Tim Horton's - in an official ribbon cutting and ground breaking ceremony. Excavation for the foundation started Monday morning and John Neutel Construction will come in next to pour the foundation, Martin said. "As soon as the foundation is in, we'll bring in plumbers to lay piping before we pour the concrete floor," he explained. Looking at a timeframe, Martin said the schedule depends on how quickly the volunteer tradespeople can get in to do their part. "However, if we get the foundation and the floor ready, hopefully we can frame it in about two weeks," he said, adding after that most work will be done on weekends when volunteers are available. "It's the first project of this type for me, so we're kind of playing it by ear." Martin said he continues to be impressed .with the amount of local businesses and tradespeople who have signed on for the project. Because of the proximity, much of that support has come from Clinton -area businesses. "We're really grateful for all of the support," he commented. "It is such a worthwhile project. I know a lot . of people, myself included, have been looking forward to this for a long time." When complete, the home will be approximately 1,050 square feet with three bedrooms and an attached car port. And while people have been very generous with donations of materials and services, Dyck said the organization is still struggling to raise the cash flow required to complete the build. Families can support one square foot of the actual home build with a donation of $75. Anyone wishing to donate can call (519) 262-5222. All donations of $10 or more will receive a tax receipt. Members of the family selection committee have also been hard at work, narrowing applicant families down to two. Committee members will present two prospective partner family profiles — which do not contain any Truck damaged in Brussels A truck parked behind a Turnberry Street apartment complex in Brussels, was damaged on Aug. 14, reports the Huron OPP. The chosen family will be introduced to the public during an onsite 'Welcome to the Community Barbecue' in mid-September. A large number of families expressed interest in being a partner family. Dyck stressed the importance of Habitat's goal of "a hand up, not a hand out." "Habitat does not 'give the home to a family...the partner, family purchases the home and Habitat for Humanity Huron County holds the no interest mortgage," he explained. "It is not subsidized housing and it is not welfare housing. A Habitat prospective partner family would be described as a working family whose income is sufficient to pay the Habitat mortgage and related housing costs, but their income falls under the current Huron low income cut off (LICO) determined by Statistics Huron's $32,000 person as Canada.
