Aug. 10. 2005 - 11 Sports Carol Carter going for gold in national ladies' lawn bowling championships By Jason Middleton Expositor Staff A member of the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club is going for Canadian gold at the Canadian Lawn B owling Championship. Playing in a doubles team, long time lawn bowler Carol Carter, of Mitchell, will face off in the Canadian championships, which are taking place in Woodstock and Kitchener from Aug. 15 to 20. This is the fourth time Carter has headed to the Canadian Lawn B owling Championships in the past six years. In a ladies' fours team, Carter won the gold in 1999, won silver in 2000 and gold again in 2004. Carter said that the only reason she is not competing in ladies' fours again this year is because one of her teammates was asked to play in an international lawn bowling' tournament in Ireland at the same time as the Canadian championships. Soon after she realized she could not play as a foursome, Carter was asked by a long- time acquaintance Maureen Thompson to compete with her at the Ontario ladies' pairs tournament held in early July in Burlington. This year, Carter will play in the Canadian championships in the doubles competition with Thompson, of London, a member of the Seaforth Lawn Bowling Club and London's Fairmont Lawn Bowling Club. "I've known her for a long time, but I've never ever bowled with her;" said Carter. who will he the team's lead. When the two bowled together at the Ontario championship they won four straight games and took gold, making them Ontario's 'A' women's double team in the Canadian championship. "Our chemistry just works," Carter said. "So hopefully we'll continue that good bowling." Carter admitted that she's glad she won't have Maureen Thompson and Carol Carter to travel as far as British Columbia (where the event was held last year) to get to this year's nationals. "I seem to get a little stressed, I'm not a traveller," she said. To prepare for the Canadian championship, Carter said that she's been lawn bowling 20 hours a week, but not with her partner. "As long as we bowl, it doesn't matter," she said.
