from Egmondville sing
at Blue Jays game again
By Susan Hundertmark
Exposkor Editor
For the third year in a row, Kim Souch
and her daughter Sara Sobey-Souch sang
the national anthem at a Blue Jays game in
Toronto on Friday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.
The two represented the
Autism Society of Ontario
during the Jays' autism day.
"The past two years have
been terrific. It's a lot of
fun - you go down by the
dugout and onto the field to
sing. And, everyone just
roars at the end," says Kim.
"Last year, there were
over 30,000 at the game but
they don't announce that
until the end of the game.
For me, that's a good
thing," she says.
Sara, 16, has autism and music has
helped her mother communicate with her
when she was a toddler before she could
talk. The two have formed a singing group
called KiSara and have been performing to
raise awareness about autism for the past
three years.
Autistic children show three 'major
characteristics including repetitive
behaviour, problems communicating and a
lack of interest in others. They are also
very sensitive and can be bothered by
noises, lights and tastes.
In Sara's case, her sensitive hearing has
created a singer with perfect pitch who
loves the Canadian national anthem.
"I do the
American anthem and Sara
harmonizes and then Sara
sings 0 Canada because she
really likes it," says Kim.
Kim adds that music
helps Sara find common
ground with others she
might have difficulty
communicating with
otherwise.
"Disabilities can create
barriers and it impresses
people to see what Sara can
do. Music is a way to show
we're all the same beneath it all," says
Kim.
Listening to a recording of herself and
her mother singing 0 Canada, Sara closes
her eyes and begins to find even more
ways to harmonize with the music.
She says she looked forward to singing
0 Canada again when the Blue Jays
played against the New York Yankees.
"It's fun and I like Toronto. I think it's
exciting," she says.
