Local boys performing at Blyth Festival
Jared Smith and Ryan Baan two of 10 children in play The Thirteenth One
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
While their previous acting
opportunities have been in
church plays, Ryan Baan, 9,
of Walton, and Jared Smith,
6, of the Dublin area, are
performing this year at the
Blyth Festival in The
Thirteenth One.
As the two youngest of 12
children in a play about a
large French Canadian
family, Ryan and Jared have
spent most of July in
rehearsal in Blyth. The play,
which began last week,
continues into the first week
of September.
Both decided to audition
after seeing ads looking for
child actors in local
newspapers.
For Ryan, the audition was
a lot of fun, playing memory
games and games of pretend.
"(Artistic Director) Eric
Coates made us do a lot of
weird stuff - we had to walk
around the room like we had
something in our hands. He
wanted to see if we could
listen to what he was saying,"
says Ryan.
In Jared's case, he didn't
really have to audition after a
conversation he had with the
director.
"Jared told Eric Coates he
thought that since the play
was about the birth of a 13th
baby, he should be
auditioning babies too. I
didn't think he'd get the part

after that but they liked his
personality," says Jared's
mom Angela.
"He thought I was bubbly,"
adds Jared.
Both boys play characters
who are several years
younger than they are.

Ryan plays five-year-old
Marcel and Jared plays an
even younger brother Charles
whose age is never stated.
The play is based on the
true story of Denyse Gervais
Regan, whose parents
contemplated putting her up
for adoption when she was
born the 13th child in a poor
Manitoba family.
Regan, the playwright,
visited rehearsals frequently,
sharing stories of her
childhood and both boys
enjoyed looking at pictures
of the characters they
portrayed.
"We saw all kinds of
pictures of her family. It's
neat to know you're playing a
real person?' says Ryan.
Ryan learned to play the
spoons for a family concert
in the play and both boys
learned a game the Gervais
family used to play reciting
the names of their family
members as fast as possible.
"In the play I get to be the
bratty younger brother. I get
to run around the room with
my sister's doll and be mean
to it," he says.
Jared says he's a little
embarrassed by a scene when
his sisters dress him up like a
doll and drag him around.
"I don't think people will
know it's me - I hope not," he
says.
Jared particularly likes a
scene when he is alone on
stage with his Papa in the
play.
"You should see my outfit.
I love it. It's a checkered shirt
and overalls with lots of
pockets. I like pockets," he
says.
Ryan is particularly excited
that on opening night, he gets
to meet the real Marcel
Gervais, who is celebrating
the 25th anniversary of being
archbishop of the Roman
Catholic Church in Ottawa
this year.
"I get to meet someone
really special," he says.
And, when he goes into
Grade 4 at Grey Central
School this fall, Ryan says
he'll have no trouble writing
about what he did on his
summer vacation after his
adventure in acting at Blyth.
"This is going to take up at
least six pages in my
journal," he says.
First dead crow of season found in Huron
A dead crow found in the
Exeter area has tested
positive for West Nile
Virus.
The Huron County Health
Unit has submitted a total
of seven birds for testing
and this is the first positive
test result, says Linda Stobo
in a press release from the
Huron County Health Unit.
In the 2004 season, the
first positive bird was found
in the Wingham area on
Aug. 3.
So far, 21 of 37 health
units have reported positive
birds for a total of 69
positive birds in Ontario.
In previous years, the
majority of human cases of
West Nile Virus in Ontario
were reported in late
August and September.
"The mosquitoes most
likely to bite you are those
breeding in your own
backyard", says Dr. Beth
Henning, Medical Officer
of Health. "Eliminating
areas of standing water is
critical, and is the single
most important measure to
reduce mosquitoes and
control the spread of the
West Nile Virus."
The Health Unit urges
residents to remain vigilant
in reducing standing water
around homes, cottages and
businesses.
In Huron County, there
have been no human or
equine cases of West Nile
Virus.
The virus has not yet
been detected in Huron
County • mosquito
populations; however,
Halton Region, Peel
Region, the City of Toronto,
Perth County, and Windsor -
Essex County have received
laboratory confirmation of
positive mosquito pools.
Huron County residents
are asked to continue to
report the location of any
dead crows and blue jays to
the Health Unit.
