Results
from
seniors'
services
assessment
to be
released
soon
The results from a needs
assessment about service
needs of the elderly in Huron
County will soon be ready for
distribution.
In 2004, the Health Unit
began a process to look at the
service needs of seniors in
Huron County.
An initial report, based on
interviews with service
providers, was published in
the fall of 2004. This first
report led to questions that we
wanted to ask seniors directly
- which is what we've been
doing for the past several
months.
Here's what we found out.
Many seniors rely heavily
on family members for social
connections, support, and to
access community services.
Seniors without supportive
family living in the area need
more services and support
from the community.
Isolation and loneliness
were identified as important
issues affecting the health of
seniors. Many people belong
to social clubs and/or
volunteer to maintain social
connections in the
community.
Access to services is
limited by the lack of
transportation for seniors.
Many seniors do not have
their own cars anymore; they
have to rely on family,
friends, volunteers, or taxi-
cabs to get to and from
appointments and community '
programs.
Seniors with cars told us
that winter driving conditions
can limit their access to
services.
Seniors living on a fixed
income are the least likely to
have adequate access to
services. They may be unable
to afford things like healthy
food, paid transportation to
appointments or the costs of
medical supplies and drugs.
We also heard that there are
not enough medical services
in Huron County - especially
doctors. Some people have no
doctor; others have to go
outside the county for a
doctor.
In addition, we heard that
nurses and other service care
providers don't have enough
resources; service providers
were generally trying very
hard but were stretched
beyond their limits.
The final report, which will
be available soon, will
provide more information and
details.
For more information,
please contact Alex Berry,
Huron County Health Unit at
483-3416. If calling long
distance, call 1-877-837-
6143.
