But, at a Chevrolet Safe and Fun Hockey camp she attended in Windsor two weeks ago, having fun and being respectful was the whole point. "All the drills were a lot of fun," she says. "It was about taking the stress out of hockey," says her mom Shelley. Shelley heard about the contest to participate in the program on the radio and entered her daughter, who met the criteria of being a hockey player between the ages of six and eight. While Lexandrea was a little scared after winning the contest - "I didn't want to do that because I didn't know anyone," she says - she enjoyed the two-day camp led by former NHLer Mike Bossy and women's Olympic hockey team member Cassie Campbell. She had never heard of either of her famous instructors before but is now a big ian of Cassie Campbell. "I'm going to watch the Olympics now and maybe I'll go all the way to the Olympics too," she says. The national Safe and Fun Hockey program was launched in 1999 after NHL great Bobby Orr asked General Motors to help him address his concerns about hockey's development in Canada. "Orr felt that kids were being pushed beyond their abilities, and that competition and the pressure to succeed were plaguing the game's focus," says the program's webpage. Shelley says she was impressed by the way the program stressed respect and responsibility, both among the children and their parents. "There were seminars for parents on how not to push your child and to just let them have fun. There was also advice about how to deal with coaches that are too competitive," she says. Both days were split between skill development on the ice and discussions about fun and respect off the ice. "Cassie told me about the heart of hockey. H stands for having fun, E is excitement, A is achievement, R is respect and responsibility and T is teamwork," says Lexandrea. At the end of the first day, the children and their parents were asked to fill in a quilt block with a promise about how they would approach hockey from now on. "I promised to always say thank you to my mom and dad and coach after every game and my dad promised to keep gas in the car for the game," says Lexandrea. "I promised to make sure my child has fun and to be proud of what she does," adds Shelley. The quilt blocks will be pieced together and displayed in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
