Students STEP into technology
By Jennifer Hubbard
News -Record Staff
Twenty-five area students
took a STEP into the world
of technology last week
during a Skilled Training
Educational Partnership day
camp.
Organized through
partnership with the Huron -
Perth Catholic District
School Board and the Bruce,
Grey, Huron, Perth,
Georgian Triangle Training
Board, the STEP camps
were held July 11-15 at St.
Anne's and St. Michael's
high schools in Clinton and
Stratford.
"The whole initiative was
brought about by the need to
introduce youth to
technology at a younger
age," camp co-ordinator
Tim Martens said.
"We're seeing a greater
need for technological skills
in everyday life and this is
just a fun camp where kids
get to make things and bring
them home," he said.
Students in Grades 5-8
were eligible for the camp,
which Martens said had a
huge drawing and could
have been filled three times
over. The first come, first
served camps were filled
just two weeks after
registration opened.
And while the primary
goal is to expose students to
technology, organizers hope
they will in turn consider
taking tech courses in high
school and even a career in
the technology field.
Teachers Jason Steinmann
and Brad Drennan — of St.
Anne's and St. Michael's -
staffed the local camps.

held recently at St. Anne's and St. Mitchael's high schools
in Clinton and Stratford.
Participants hailed from
throughout the county
including Exeter, Zurich,
Clinton, Hensall Goderich
and Seaforth.
The week's timetable
featured a variety of
activities, including a wood
project, glider challenge,
can crusher build,
automotive and lawn mower
service and pop bottle
rockets.
However, the highlight for
many was the man-size
cardboard boat project.
After the design and build
stages, students had the
opportunity to test their
creations on Wednesday
during a field trip to the
Wildwood Conservation
Area near St. Marys.
The groups also toured the
Stratford Airport and FAG
Aerospace.
Drennan said the Grade 5-
8 age group is a perfect time
to get students into the shop.
"The earlier we get them
in to experience the shop
and use tools, the earlier we
can give them an idea of
what is available in terms of
career opportunities," he
explained.
"But like I always tell my
kids at the high school level,
any time you can learn a
skill as a future car owner
and home owner, it can help
you," he said.
Many students had
already been exposed to
tools at home, but the
workshops were still
beneficial because they
stressed safety and proper
tool use, Steinmann added.
The Ontario Youth
Apprenticeship Program
(OYAP), Huron
Manufacturing Association,
Huron Business
Development Corporation,
Perth Community Futures
and Heartland Community
Credit Union also made
contributions to the STEP
camps.
"Technology affects
everyone's life in some way
or another and we should
embrace it," Martens said.
Compost facility's location still up
in the air after council debates issue
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
The location of a compost
facility for Seaforth is still
up in the air after Huron East
council debated the issue
again last Tuesday.
But, if no new location can
be found before the next
council meeting on Aug. 16.
council decided to return the
facility to a former location
at the end of Railway Street
near Sun North Industries.
"What's wrong with down
by Sun North?" asked
Seaforth Coun. Lou Maloney
and McKillop Coun. Sharon
McClure made the motion.
• But, the motion was
altered to name the Railway
Street location as a last resort
when Clerk -Administrator
Jack McLachlan predicted
more complaints from the
public at that location.
A new location at the
Seaforth lagoon was
proposed recently by Public
Works Coordinator John
Forrest after residents of
Harpurhey Complained about
the present location when a
fire sent smoke through the
neighbourhood.
But. after learning that a

"1 want to know the cost,"
said Tuckersmith Coun.
Larry McGrath.
McGrath expressed
concern about the fact that
the compost facility has still
not been moved from
Harpurhey.
"We had an insurance
company telling us to shut it
down right away. Are we
looking for more trouble?"
he asked.
"Where does it go in the
meantime?" responded
Mayor Joe Seili, adding his
frustration that council is
"back at stage
One" with the
issue.

moving the

"I thought
that was a good

do. It's close to
the fire hall if
there's a fire,"
he said.

McGrath suggested
moving back the fence at the
Tuckersmith gravel pit and
using municipal land there.
But, Tuckersmith Coun.
Bill DeJong complained that
someone might "get too
close and fall in (to the
gravel pit) with their pickup
truck.
"They won't be back in the
pit," responded McGrath.
McKillop Coun. Ferg
Kelly suggested picking up
lawn waste and brush,
chipping it and sending it to
the Mid -Huron Landfill site.
But, Forrest responded that
"it costs a lot of honey to
bring in a grinder."
