Libraries shocked by cuts
By Mark Nonkes
Signal -Star Staff
An unexpected move from
the Ontario government
comes as a "total surprise and
shock to the library world,"
said Huron County's head
librarian.
Two weeks ago local
librarians learned the Ontario
government had took a
shredder to the 2005 library
budget, cutting about $1.2
million in funding.
County Librarian Beth
Ross told Huron County
councillors at the July 7
council meeting the cuts have
prompted local librarians to
rally in protest against the
government action.
In the cuts, Ross said
$700,000 is being slashed
from the Southern Ontario
Library Service (SOLS), a
service frequently used by
the Huron County Library.
Another $340,000 is being
cut from computer services
and $160,300 from strategic
development fund.
"Indirectly, we'll notice a
reduction in services," Ross
said.
Ross explained SOLS is
responsible for inter -library
loans as well as specialized
training.
The recent budget cut to
library services is the largest
since the Mike Harris
Conservative government
reduced funding in the mid-
1990s.
Operating grants approved
for 2005 with the government
remain stable, she added.
Correspondence
The cuts, however, have
prompted the Huron County
Library to join a lobby in
protest, Ross said.
"All the money you give to
other countries and stuff and
we don't keep our own
people educated," said Neil
Rintoul (Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh).
Rintoul made a motion to
register Huron County as
officially joining the lobby in
protest. The move was
approved unanimously.
