Belarussian children return to Huron County
By Ben Forrest
Expositor Staff
There are many things
Canada has that Belarus
doesn't, as Sasha Tysbouk
who lives in Minsk, can tell
you.
There are no hamburgers,
no hot dogs, no Kraft Dinner,
no Dr. Pepper. The diet is not
dominated here by soups and
potatoes as it is
there. And, oh, yeah
- so far, Belarus
doesn't have a
Canada's
Wonderland.
Simply mention
the name of the
theme park, and
Tysbouk's eyes
light up like the
Vegas strip and his
face breaks into a broad grin.
He promptly settles down,
bridling his enthusiasm with
teenage cool and says, "like,
first year was fun, lots of fun.
Second year, third year, lots
of fun (but) it's not so
wonderful now."
But Seaforth resident Lynn
Dawe, president of the Huron
County for Children of
(HCCC) Chernobyl program
that has brought Sasha to stay
with her for five of the last
six years, knows better.
"It's still good," she breaks
in. It might not be as exciting
as those first few years, but it
doesn't seem like you'd have
to drag him there kicking and
screaming.
Sasha is one of 16
Belarussian children visiting
Huron County this year,
away from a home country
that lacks many of the
comforts that Canadians take
for granted, but has in spades
something that no one could
possibly want.
That would be high
radiation levels,
caused bjr the
Chernobyl nuclear
disaster of 1986.
The hope of
Children of
Chernobyl, which
actually has chapters
all over the world, is
that time spent away from
those radiation levels will
strengthen the children's'
immune systems and reduce
their chances of getting
cancer.
It will also give them
exposure to imported foods
such as bananas and oranges,
which are often not
affordable in their home
country.
While here, the kids
receive medical and dental
attention, blend in with their
host families and attend
gatherings such as potluck
dinners with others involved
in the program.
They also get
Wonderland
free of charge
on a specially
designated
Children of
Chernobyl
day at the
park on which
the tickets are
donated,
Dawe says.

younger sister
Lena, now 12,

`We'll plan

become a tennis

staying back to
take lessons
and train with
her coach. "
"They have
rankings in
their country,
even at 12,"
Dawe says.
"She gets
points and that

competitions
and she would
lose points if

in the summer."
Sasha himself is studying
to be a computer
programmer, alid though he's
only 14 is involved in an
after-school program that is,
in Dawe's words, "kind of
intense."
There is a tendency in
Belarus to pick a single area,
focus on it and excel in it,
Dawe says.
The kids will return to their
home country on Aug. 8,
which may be tough for
Sasha.
Asked what he likes most
about coniing to Canada, he
says "everything." But it may
also be difficult for Dawe,
who has said in the past she
considers Sasha and Lena to
be her Belarussian children.
"We'll plan to do it again
next year," she says, "we
hope. Because, as I said, he's
part of our family now, and I
know when I got the e-mail
and found out that Lena
wouldn't be coming this year,
it was pretty hard for me. Not
that I don't want her to excel
in tennis, but I'd like her to
come back too."
Dawe says anyone
interested in hosting a child
next year is welcome to
contact her at 527-2060.
