Get lost in Yonkers
St. Columban native shines in production of Lost in Yonkers
By Jason Middleton
Expositor Staff
Not only was I Lost in
Yonkers, I was hoping
maybe for a detour so that I
could stay a bit longer.
The two -and -a -half hour
play tells the story of an
eccentric New York family
in crisis during the summer
of 1942.
Two teenagers, Jay and
Arty, are forced to live with
their ill-tempered
Grandmother Kurnitz after
their father takes a job where
he has to travel across the
country.
What follows is a story of
two boys trying to survive in
a situation they've never
been faced with before —
their extended family.
While the boys are staying
in their grandmother's
apartment, they have to share
the pullout couch with each
other, and are forced to hear
about their aunt and uncle's
problems.
Mixed with moments of
extreme hilarity and sincere
emotion, Yonkers reminds
you of what it's like to be a
child stuck in a situation you
cannot understand but you
are forced to accept.
St. Columban native
Thomas Murray plays Arty, a
role he was made for. As the
inquisitive younger brother,
Murray has perfect comedic
timing and helps add a sense
of innocence to the play.
While he may not have as
much experience as some of
the other actors, Murray
makes up for it with his
strong performance and
charisma.
Playing the role of Jay is
Mitchell Marcus who was
not only captivating, but also
Jason Middleton photo
Starring in Lost In Yonkers is James Kall as Father, Michelle Marcus as Jay, and Thomas
Murray as Arty. The play runs in Drayton from July 20 to August 20.
perfected the accent of any
person who grew up living in
New York. A perfect match
to Murray's innocent
character, Marcus presents
Jay as a person trying to
figure out what he can do to
help his family during a
desperate time.
You can't help but love
Allison Lawrence playing
the role of Aunt Bella a
character with a childlike
attitude and is reminiscent of
a young Edith Bunker from
'70s sitcom All In The
Family.
Not only does Lawrence
make the audience laugh (to
the point of crying at points)
but she also makes you
think.
Araby Lockhart plays the
perfect 4ifficult Grandmother
Kurniti by swinging her
cane at her troublesome
grandchildren.
This poignant comedy was
directed by Adam Furfaro,
who directed last year's
production of the Cemetery
Club at the Huron Country
Playhouse, and again hit the
bittersweet comedy nail right
on the head.
Lost In Yonkers won a
Pulitzer Prize in 1991 and
was written by Paul Simon,
whose other works include
the Odd Couple and Barefoot
in the Park.
While the play was only on
a 10 -day run in July at the
Huron Country Playhouse,
you can catch the play in
Drayton from July 20 to
August 20.
So if you decide to go on a
road trip to go see Lost in
Yonkers while it's playing at
the Drayton Festival Theatre
make sure you bring a map
because this play is not to be
missed.
County council grumbles over rumble strips
By Mark Nonkes
Signal -Star Staff
Huron County councillors
seem to have hit a few bumps
along the road as the topic of
rumble strips was again
debated at this months council
meeting.
One motion failed, another
was tabled and, ultimately, the
topic was sent back for further
discussion after a heated
discussion between
councillors and county staff
was created.
"We have a policy that's
flawed," said Coun. Ken Oke
(South Huron).
The grumble over rumble
strips was sparked after
residents in St. Joseph
complained about the noise
created by the speed bumps in
their village.
"We have a single issue
here," said Coun. Bernie
MacLellan (Huron East). "We
need a policy, we need it for
all of Huron County."

separate issues was put
forward by Coun. Jim
Fergusson (Bluewater) but
defeated.
During the meeting it was
suggested that designated
areas, such as hamlets,
villages and towns, not have
rumble strips built within the
confines.
"I do think putting rumble
strips in a 50 kilometre and
hour area is not a wise idea,"
Oke said.
Following that, Oke
presented a motion which
would have prevent putting
rumble strips in an area with
more than eight houses.
"What happens to Blyth
and Londesboro," questioned
Coun. Ellen Connelly
(Goderich). "Are those strips
going to be removed?"
Coun. Bill Dowson
(Bluewater) countered the
highway traffic act was in
place to deal with people
speeding in 50 kilometre
zones.
County Engineer Don
Pletch told council rumble
strips were not put in place to
pick on the people living
within earshot of them. He
added they were designed for
the public's safety and to
notify them when to slow
down or of an upcoming stop
sign.
"It isn't for when the
weather is dry, it's when it's
foggy," he said.
The noise created, Pletch
said, is not as terrible as has
been suggested as County
staff took a noise meter to
various locations throughout
the county and compared
sound levels. In particular,
Pletch said the St. Joseph's
rumble strips were no louder
than the average office.
Later, MacLellan suggested
the setback distance for
rumble strips coming into
town be increased.
"This may be the best of
both worlds," he said. "We
haven't got rid of rumble
strips altogether but we've
taken it out of the area."
Eventually, Warden Doug
Layton weighed in.
"We've been discussing this
for'quite a few minutes so
let's continue on," he said.
Coun. Deb Shewfelt
(Goderich) suggested sending
the tabled motion back to
committee for further
discussions, a move that
found favour with the council,
"That's where it should be,
councillors making the
decisions," Klopp said,
directing his comments
towards Pletch.
