New priest, Father Alan
Dufraimont arrives
in Dublin and Mitchell
By Ben Forrest
Expositor Staff
Father Alan Dufraimont,
who recently took over as the
priest at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Dublin and
Mitchell's St. Vincent de
Paul knows life isn't easy.
He knows people suffer a
lot. And he certainly doesn't
want to add to that burden.
"I want to celebrate life
with people and help people,"
he said last *eek when asked
for his philosophy toward his
profession.
"I'm not here to make life
difficult for people," he said.
"I want them to see the
mercy of God, the love of
God, and the forgiveness of
God, and that our life can be
better if we journey with
God.
"I want to
make people
happier — you
know, fulfilled"
Father
Dufraimont
comes to the area
from Woodstock
and Princeton,
where he was the
pastor at two
churches.
Dufraimont
was born in
Tillsonburg and
spent time living
there, as well as Delhi and
Simcoe before attending the
University of Western
Ontario. He was a
psychology major at Western
and later went to St. Peter's
Seminary.
Asked why he became a
priest in the first place,
Dufraimont says, "Two
things: my love of God...and
I wanted to help people. I
figured the best way of doing
that is if I can...I thought, if I
can't bring people into a
relationship with God, and
help them in their spiritual
relationship — in their faith —
then I can't do much more
for them."
He appears to like his new
home, saying, "It's great.
People are very friendly, very
hospitable, very open.
(There's) strong faith in the
area. The faith is very
strong."
Dufraimont holds three
weekend masses — 5 p.m. at
St. Patrick's on Saturday,
then at 9 a.m. on Sundays at
St. Vincent de Paul at back at
St. Patrick's for 11 a.m. the
same day.
And although that would
seem to be a demanding
schedule, Dufraimont says,
"It's easy compared to
Woodstock.
I had four on
t h e
weekends
there."
He also
holds
masses at
various
times and
places
between
Tuesday and
Friday.
Dufraimont
admits he
d i d n' t
picture himself in his current
profession until he was late
in his high school career.
"I was never an altar server,
like many priests," he says. "I
didn't hang around the
church. We went to mass
every Sunday as a family and
that was it. So I didn't grow
up thinking I'd be a pries
no. It just kind of hit me
when I had to make a career
decision. That's when I
thought of the priesthood."

There are roughly 200
families in both St. Patrick's
and St. Vincent de Paul,
which presents an interesting
situation for the new priest.
Dufraimont says the smallest
parish he had overseen prior
to coming here had about 450
families.
That may not be such a bad
thing, however. Earlier in an
interview with this
newspaper, Dufraimont
explained a piece of the local
bishop's reasoning in
assigning him to this area.
"He said, 'It's less work
and you can rest a bit..."
Dufraimont explained.
