New playground equipment
christened in Londesboro
By Ben Forrest
Expositor Staff
The outdated playground
equipment that used to sit
near the ball diamond at
Londesboro's Hullett Central
public school has been
replaced, thanks to donations
from the Ontario Trillium
Foundation, the Municipality
of Central Huron and the
fundraising activities of other
locals.
The Trillium Foundation
donated $20,000 toward the
cost of the new equipment,
while Central Huron
contributed $2,000 and the
Londesboro Angels, a ladies'
slo-pitch team, ran a
tournament that raised $1,161
for the cause.
The Hullett Athletic
Association (HAA) raised
$8,910 of its own to cover the
rest of the cost. The total cost
of the equipment was about
$32,071.
Says Doug Dolmage of the
HAA, "The old equipment
was needing repairs, and it
was outdated. It had been
here approximately 30
years..."
Although the new
equipment sits on grounds
owned by the school,
Dolmage says it will be
available for use by anyone
in the community.
The equipment is shielded
from the sun by a large
yellow canopy, which also
provides protection from foul
balls which may fly over the
backstop at the ball diamond
during games.
That canopy, says
Dolmage, is an asset,
"Especially when there's ball
tournaments here all day
long. Some kids are here
almost all day long so it
really does save them a lot
from the sun."

A number of local dignitaries and community members were present to christen Hullett
Central Public School's new $32,000 playground equipment on June 27 in Londesboro.
Pictured in front from left to right are Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle, Al Bosman of the
Londesboro Lions Club, Huron -Bruce MPP Carol Mitchell, Keith Allen and Ron Nesbitt
(in wheelchair), also of the Lions Club, Karen and Doug Dolmage of the Hullett Athletic
Association, Central Huron councillor Marg Anderson, Kathleen Pletsch (Chair of the
Local Grant Review Team of the Ontario Trillium Foundation for Grey -Bruce -Huron -
Perth) and Central Huron Facilities Manager Steve Campbell. In back are a group of
Hullett Central students.
Ontario Trillium Foundation
for Grey -Bruce -Huron -Perth,
said the Foundation decided
the grant given here was
appropriate because the
project is in line with its
mandate.
"What we always say is our
mandate is to help our
communities become
healthier and stronger, and
more vibrant," she says, "and
this is a perfect example of
that."
Pletsch seemed happy with
the finished product, saying
the equipment is
"wonderful."
"I taught here (at Hullett
Central) for 12 years, so this
community is dear to my
heart, and I love it ... You
know how many kids will be
using it — (at) baseball games,
after school, whenever. It's
great."
Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle and MPP Carol
Mitchell were both on hand
on July 27 for the
equipment's official opening,
and shared similar
sentiments.
Said Mitchell, "I think the
equipment is wonderful,"
adding later that "This is a
very vibrant community, and
they've done very well.
Playground equipment is
very expensive now."
Steckle, who said he was
home from Ottawa to see his
grandson graduate public
school, concurred.
"I think it's wonderful," he
said.
"It's sort of following the
theme of most communities
where they've had to upgrade
because the old equipment
(was) deemed unsafe."

running Internet cheque
scams.
Huron OPP Sr. Const. Don
Shropshall is warning
anybody selling anything on
the Internet to he vigilant.
He said thieves will find an
Internet advertisement and
offer to buy it from the seller.
The potential buyer,
Shropshall added, may say
they live in North America,
but usually live in Africa or
other less developed nations.
"A lot of this will happen
through e-mails," he said.
The new buyer will then
send a cheque for the item,
but the cheque will be made
out for more than the price.
"The scammer will invent
some excuse for this
overpayment and ask that the
balance he electronically
transferred to a specified
hank account," said
Shropshall, adding the
thieves may say the extra
money is to pay a handler.
"Once you have sent an
electronic hank statement,
anybody can cash it."
This is exactly what the
thieves do.
"Later the seller finds out
that his or her bank has
dishonoured the original
cheque," he said.
"The seller has been bilked
out of a substantial amount,
with little chance of
recovering the money. Also
the item still remains
unsold."
Shropshall said the scam
has happened in Goderich
and he is "sure there are
people doing it right now."
The police do investigate
cheque fraud, but
unfortunately "by the time
we're involved they're gone,
and you are already out,"
Shropshall said.
"it also takes time and
money to conduct these
investigations."
Instead, he suggests anyone
selling items in the Internet
riot to accept overdrawn
cheques.
"Make sure they send the
correct amount."
If a seller does. they could
he left with less money and
the same beat -up old sofa.
