Radiothon to be hosted at Seaforth Legion
By Susan Hundertmark

After looking at a tent, the
Lions Park and the Seaforth
clinic as possible locations for
this fall's radiothon, the
Seaforth Community Hospital
foundation decided on renting
the Seaforth Legion.
"We kept thinking we
wanted to get everyone
involved and at the Legion
we'll be right downtown and Dollar Radiothon this
everyone will be driving by," October.

Steckle hopes for border decision
By Carissa Pertschy
Signal -Star Staff
The latest battle in the
border war over mad cow
disease is set to go before a
Seattle courtroom today
(Wednesday) as the U.S.
Government tries to overturn
an injunction barring imports
of Canadian cattle.
Huron -Bruce MP Paul
Steckle said he expects a
decision to come down today,
noting "I'd be really
surprised if a three-judge
panel doesn't rule favourably.
"If we look at fairness and
what's right, that'll be the
outcome."
U.S. Treasury Secretary,
John Snow, said in a release
after the two-day bilateral
trade talks between top trade
officials in Canada and the
U.S. that "the four-month old
injunction preventing the
border from reopening was
ill-considered, and not based
on scientific facts.
"We're pressing hard. The
(U.S.) Justice Department is
appealing that injunction
seeking to get that injunction
removed and I trust we'll be
successful in these efforts."
Live Canadian cattle have
been banned from the U.S.
for more than two years,
since Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy (BSE) was
first found on an Alberta
farm.
Canada's beef industry,
which Federal Finance
Minister Ralph Goodale
estimates has suffered more
than $7 -billion in export
losses, is "deeply concerned
about the Seattle appeal and
another court hearing in
Montana on July 27 at which
time a protectionist ranchers'
group is trying to get the
border permanently closed, to
all Canadian beef exports."
Goodale said after the
discovery of BSE in a Texas
born cow, the border should
be "immediately reopened to
live Canadian cattle.
"We believe that with the
most recent development in
the United States, the
rationale behind the
judgement of (the injunction)
has absolutely evaporated.
There is no justification for
that position."
Steckle echoed his
sentiments.
"There's been so many ups
and downs on this one...We
have to look at fairness and
what's right."
Earlier this week New
Zealand announced they
would Lift their remaining
BSE -related restrictions on
Canadian beef, effective
immediately.
New Zealand Food Safety
Authority announced they
recognized that the consumer
safeguards implemented in
Canada to manage the human
health risks associated with
BSE are equivalent to New
Zealand standards.
This announcement by
New Zealand marks the 15th
country to resume full or
partial trade with Canada
since the borders were closed
in May 2003.
