It's time to spread our wings
and soar to the next destination
by Gary Paquette
Fellow students, teachers, and honourable guests,
the years at Huron Centennial School have been full of
changes.
For many of the students, including myself, one of
the biggest changes was
the closing of Vanastra
Community School and the
relocation of its students to
Huron Centennial.
There was a wide range
of emotions felt at that
time by both the Huron
Centennial and the
Vanastra students. But by
overcoming these emotions
appropriately, through
friendship, kindness,
flexibility and compromise
we became one united
student body.
This serves to remind us
that education is not just
the three is but an
opportunity to grow into
better people.
Throughout the years the
teachers at this school
helped us to develop the
tools we need to fully
prepare for our high school
experience. The changes in
the curriculum have
enabled the teachers to
show us by example how
to successfully adapt to
your situation.
These skills are not only
essential when we are in
high school but, also in our future endeavours within
our thriving, dynamic, progressive society. Personally,
I think our teachers are second to none.
The teachers have guided us with a firm but caring
hand throughout the years while bearing in mind that a
sense of humour comes in handy.
For example Mr. Cassel, much like Eeyore losing his
tail, we laughed alongside him as he got stuck between
seats imitating a donkey.
And who can forget the last campfire at camp Celtic
when J.D Koyle did his dance? Who knows? Maybe
sometime in the future we'll be seeing him in the
remake of Grease.
Other memories of being able to laugh at ourselves
include days such as wacky hair day and reverse
clothes day. Which by the way I forgot all about but
thanks to a good friend, Jordan, she was able to supply
me with a dress, lei and a wonderful coconut bra. Hey
Jordan, would you let my
mom know this isn't a
permanent change? Oh and
let us never speak of this
again.
I hope we are all able to
keep this skill, the skill of
humour, through high
school and beyond.
My first introduction
into drama was at Huron
Centennial. This year's
production of Duck Tails
and Bobby Sox was a
wonderful experience once
again proving that Huron
Centennial students enjoy
the spotlight.
I hope the dances in
high school are as good as
a success as they have
been at Huron Centennial.
A special thanks to our
student council who made
the dances possible when
circumstances with the
teachers changed. Being
one of the unofficial pop
and chip vendors half the
time, ensures me of a
position at any Winks
variety store.
There have been many
opportunities to participate
at sports during our years at public school. This shows
that education is even more the academics.
We have been able to see the development of all
around athletes such as Craig Dalrymple and Brent
Cleave. Not that I'm saying you guys aren't
academically inclined, I just wanted to say you guys
were good at sports.
It is now time for us to make yet another change as
we enter into high school. New friends, new teachers.
new challenges and new opportunities.
It is now time for us to be like the caterpillar after its
change into a butterfly, we must now spread our wings
and soar, soar to our next destination.
