Doig narrowly misses
cut at British Open
qualifier, in Scotland
By Ben Forrest

Ian Doig, who grew up in
Seaforth and is a veteran of
the Canadian Professional
Golf Tour, saw a long -held
dream die prematurely on
Monday as he missed the cut
in a qualifier for the British
Open, held in Glasgow,
Scotland.
Doig, a three -time Ontario
PGA champion, says he had
"always thought about
playing in the British Open"
and decided to go for it this
year, in part because 2005
marks the 50th anniversary of
the year his father, Seaforth
resident Ken Doig, played
two rounds at the Open. Ken
narrowly failed to shoot the
score that would have
allowed him to move on.
Ian played one round in the
qualifier on Monday and shot
a 73, missing the cut by two
strokes.
"It's very disappointing and
I'm frustrated by it," Ian said
on Monday night, "because I
actually struck the ball very
well. I was very pleased with
the way I hit my driver and
hit my irons."
The greens at Renfrew, the
course where he was playing,
were less well -kept than
Doig is used to playing back
home, and gave him trouble.
he said.
"When I missed a green.
because the putting was so
difficult for me, I really just
didn't have an opportunity to
get the ball up and save a
par," he said.
"But you know what?" he
added later, "in the last few
years I've realized that as
long as I prepare myself
correctly, and I try 100 per
cent on every shot and give it
my all, I can't really be
frustrated"
He feels he can come home

with his head held high, and
somewhat more prepared
than he might have been
otherwise as he heads into
the Ontario and Canadian
PGA championships. Both
take place later this month.
Renfrew was "a very, very
good golf course," he says.
"You had to drive the ball
well, you had to hit a lot of
fades, a lot of draws off the
tee, some straight shots, and
the greens were very difficult
to hit, so it actually is going
to be good preparation for
me"
Doig said he planned to
stay in Scotland for a few
more days, playing at many
of the courses his father
played during the 10 years he
lived there.
"I just played King James
VI club, which is where
(Dad) was a member at and
he was the club champion
there in 1953 and '55. So that
was fun to go out there and
play and see where he kind
of did all his golf when he
was younger," Ian said.
Ian's past
accomplishments include
winning the 2004 Canadian
PGA Club Pro
championship, as well as
Ontario PGA championships
in 2003, 2000 and 1986. He
turned pro in 1984 and joined
the Canadian Tour in 1985.
Ian's mother Mary says her
family is very golf -oriented,
and it would appear she's not
lying.
Ian's brother Cameron is
the pro at Seaforth Golf &
Country Club and has
caddied for Ian in the past.
Another brother, Kenny, also
works at the Seaforth course
and was a professional caddy
on the PGA tour for 22 years.
A third brother, Todd, is the
green superintendant at the
Seaforth course, and Mary

reports that Ian's sisters
Carolanne and Gail are gifted
golfers also.
Ian attended Seaforth
Public School and Seaforth
District High School. He is
now 44 years old and resides
in Sharon, Ontario, north of
Toronto.
Ian's family has been
involved with the Seaforth
Golf and Country Club since
1960, says Carolanne, and
everyone there was rooting
for him during his quest.
The club is currently owned
by she and brothers Cameron
and Todd, Carolanne says.
