Alliance member Bob
Norris asked if the Huron
East representatives
expressed concerns about not
having representation on the
Alliance.
"Or, has it been laid to

LAC chair Arend Streutker

Heat waves raise power use
By Laura Cudworth
Beacon -Herald Staff
This latest heat wave is
taxing the power grid as
consumption rises with the
humidity.
Last Monday at about
4:15 p.m., Festival Hydro
hit a peak in consumption
of 80,801 kilowatts. Last
June the average peak was
75,412, said Bill Zehr, the
utility's president.
However, it's not a
record. In August 2001,
peak consumption in
Stratford reached 83,759
kilowatts.
"We have not reached
that level of demand since
2001," Zehr said.
The Independent
Electricity System Operator
(IESO) is expecting record
high demand across the
province today and is
urging users to conserve,
especially between 8 a.m.
and 8 p.m.
Demand across the
province hit a record peak
of 26,157 megawatts
yesterday afternoon,
breaking the previous high
of 25,414 set in August
2002. The demand for
electricity today is expected
to exceed yesterday's
record.
The IESO sends out
power warnings when
reserve supplies are low and
is warning more demands
on the system could mean
either voltage reduction in
Ontario or emergency
purchases from other areas.
Stratford was a winter -
peaking city, but more
consumers have air
conditioners now, so
consumption peaks in the
summer, Mr. Zehr said.
That trend is consistent with
the rest of the province. In
January, peak consumption
averaged about 73,000
kilowatts.

Two new members choosen
to sit on Seaforth's LAC
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
A former nurse and a
Seaforth engineer and fanner
were chosen to sit on the
Seaforth Local Advisory
Committee (LAC) for the
Huron -Perth Healthcare
Alliance.
Kay Mailloux and Bill
Scott, both of Seaforth have
filled the two vacancies on
the Seaforth LAC and
attended their first meeting
last Tuesday.
"We had some good
candidates and that made the
decision difficult. But, it was
nice to have a choice," said
Seaforth Community
Hospital site administrator
Mary Cardinal at last
Tuesday's meeting.
Mailloux is a retired
registered nurse who used to
work at the Seaforth hospital
and Scott was born and
raised in Seaforth, trained as
an engineer and has a
background in business and
agriculture.
While Huron East Mayor
Joe Seili had asked both the
Alliance and the LAC to
consider appointing a
representative from council
to either body in the spring,
Seili said during a phone
interview that he is confident
communications are
improving between the
municipality and the hospital.
Huron East Coun. David
Blaney, who represents the
ward of Brussels, was one of
the candidates for the LAC
openings in Seaforth but was
not chosen.
"Whether Dave got on the
committee or not, they had to
make the selection and it was
a tough decision. All those
who applied were very good
candidates and will work
well," he said.
Seili, Deputy -Mayor
Bernie MacLellan and Huron
East Clerk -Administrator
Jack McLachlan met with
both the Alliance board and
the Seaforth LAC recently.
"We still have concerns but
we're going to meet with
both groups every quarter
and talk about mutual
concerns and where we can
help each other," said Seili.
LAC vice -chair Sheila
Morton also reported to the
LAC Tuesday about the
meeting June 10 with Huron
East's mayor, deputy -mayor
and clerk.
"We talked about the
positive things going ahead
and council is pleased with
the health centre and the
health team. It was a very
good meeting - we're
working together and we
