"Why," he asked quite sincerely one day, "would anyone read a book when they can just see the movie?" The question before us today is quite similar: "Why," you might ask, "should I pay X number of dollars to see Drayton Entertainment's production of Beauty and the Beast, (which closed at the Huron Country Playhouse on July 2) when I can rent the movie for about five bucks and won't have to put anything on over my underwear when I watch it?" But, with apologies to the Drayton folks, who truly did an excellent job with this play... unless you're totally enamoured with live theatre, there really wasn't much reason to go. It's not that Drayton's production wasn't a wonderful piece of work—from the sets to the acting to the costumes to the orchestra backing the cast, it truly was. It's just that, apart from the fact that you actually see the actors instead of just hearing their voices, there wasn't all that much to distinguish the play from the movie version. Belle, admirably played by Karen Coughlin, is still Belle, the bookish and wide-eyed youth who with father Maurice (Sandy Winsby) is a social outcast in their small hometown. And Gaston (Jay Davis) is still the muscle-bound brute who desires the female lead. The Beast (David Ludwig) is inwardly and outwardly ugly as ever and still must love and he loved in order to return to his handsome former self. To be fair, there are minor differences, but for the most part they are subtractions from the film version that wouldn't translate well to stage, rather than additions that offer something the movie didn't. The lone exceptions may be the excellent dance numbers...but (and this may be my testosterone talking) they alone aren't enticing enough in my mind to justify the extra scratch it would' have cost you to get in. I want to stress once more that the play was extremely well done. it's just that if it were in a police line-up with the film, you wouldn't have much luck distinguishing between the two. There were many in the audience that closing night who loved the play, and I'm .not going to deny that I liked it. And once again let's he clear that Drayton did some excellent work. But with all of this said and considered, I'd just as soon have watched the movie. ICE SCULPTURE SHOWCASE FLORA-GANZA...
