Huron County fights back against
drugs with recent police busts
By Ben Forrest
Expositor Staff
Though Canada is known
for its peacekeeping, there is
a war of sorts currently being
fought in Huron County—a
war on drugs.
Though it's easy to forget in
the sleepy towns and villages
of this area—and the
expansive agriculture
communities that make up
the rest of it—illegal drugs
are a serious problem, as
recent events suggest.
A recent police report
stated that 27 men and
women—including some
from Clinton and
Brussels—were charged in a
recent sting that saw over
$614,000 worth of illegal
drugs seized by OPP officers
from Bruce, Grey, Huron and
Perth counties.
Large quantities of
methamphetamine, cocaine,
cannabis resin and marijuana
were found, along with 80
marijuana plants, 62 ecstasy
pills and what was described
as„ various amounts of
prescription drugs such as
oxycodone, ,morphine and
percocet.”
Earlier this year in Huron
East, over $483,000 worth of
marijuana plants, processed
marijuana and cannabis resin
was seized from a farm
located between Brucefield
and Seaforth. And more
recently, Huron OPP sent out
a plea to local farmers to help
them locate illegal marijuana
plants commonly found in
corn fields and sometimes
along fences, creek beds,
streams, rivers and in areas of
bushy trees.
"We have...discovered
several marijuana (grow
operations) in the last couple
of years," says Huron OPP
Senior Const. Don
Shropshall
"Most of those
have been
marijuana
grows with 300
or more plants."
Shropshall
said later in an
interview with
the Expositor
that the nature
of those
operations has
changed
somewhat over
the years. "It
used to be that
we used to find
large quantities
of the plants in
cornfields, but
because of how
easily that can be spotted.
what they're doing now is
they're...putting less plants in
one spot and they're
spreading it out more."
"Instead of having 2,000
plants in one location they'll
put 40 and 50 here, they'll put
40 and 50 in another spot, so
that way if you find it you're
not going to find 'it all," he
said later.
Shropshall says 2,000
marijuana plants were found
growing outdoors in the
county last year, each valued
at about $1,000 apiece. The
plants are usually grown in
cornfields because corn
grows so tall that it conceals
the illegal plants. "You can
spot it from
the air but if
you ' r e
driving on
the road you
can't see it
because of
the corn
that's' there,"
he says.
Persons
growing
marijuana, if
caught, they
are charged
with
production of
a controlled
substance,
Shropshall
says, or
possibly
production of a controlled
substance with purpose of
trafficking "depending on the
quantity that is found," he
explains. Penalties range
from fines to jail terms of "up
to four or five years,"
Shropshall says, with the
possibility of lengthier..

Const. Don Shropshall
sentences for those who have
previously been through the
system and previously
charged.
Though the OPP has not
been out on foot looking for
plants, Shropshall said
earlier, three different
fanners had called the police
after finding plants on their
own, and those plants had
been removed and destroyed.
Shropshall said near the
beginning of the interview
that marijuana is likely the
number one recreational
drug in the county other than
alcohol.
