Although the tragedies have prompted no extra safety precautions to be undertaken at either the Seaforth Lions Pool or the pool at Vanastra Recreation Centre (VRC), the staff at both facilities remain extremely committed to water safety. "When a tragedy like that happens we don't all of a sudden have a special workshop on water safety," says VRC manager Lissa Berard. "That's what we do here, is water safety, period. We do it all the time, every day." Swimming lessons are frequently taught at the VRC and, says Berard, "water safety is part of swimming lessons. (Students) don't just learn to swim, they also learn about water safety." St. James School teacher Teresa Finlayson, however, realizes that by a certain age, many kids have stopped taking swimming lessons and because of that fact - as well as peer pressure that might cause them to be reckless - they sometimes need to be refreshed on certain water safety principles. For that reason, Finlayson recently brought a group of Grade 7 students to the VRC for a workshop on the issue. That workshop, which is offered to many schools in the area, covered things such as recognizing when somebody is in difficulty, what to do when someone is injured in boating accidents, and various tips on how to buy time while waiting for rescue workers to arrive - treading water for instance. Basic principles like when and when not to dive were also covered. "Our hope and our goal," says Berard, "is that they learn something from here so that if they are ever in a real- life situation they know how to help themselves and others. No child is permitted into the deep end unless they can swim across the width of the pool three times, Phillips says, and the pool is always closed when thunder or lightning occurs, and during heavy rainfall that obstructs the lifeguards' abilities to see the bottom of the pool. "It might look like they're playing in the shallow end but they really can't touch and they're really, like, bobbing up and down," she says. Phillips also says a home pool should have the deep end clearly marked, "because a kid might not know the slope's there and they could just go under." "Make sure you always have buoyant objects around," she says, and "never let your kids go swimming by themselves." Swimming lessons are also important, she says. "It really does help. Even the littlest stroke, like, floating on your back could easily get them to the side (of the pool)." "Beaches are even more dangerous, so make sure you never let the kids go out on the beach by themselves especially since the water's a little more cloudy," she says. "It's really hard to tell if someone goes under."
