THE HURON EXPOSITOR, June 29, 2006 -11
More than 400 people remember and celebrate
the parish of St. Columban on its final day
Over 400 people, past and
present parishioners and
visitors, filled St. Columban
Church to capacity to share
in the final day of
remembering and celebration
for this parish family and
church.
The St. Columban Church
Choir sang a number of
hymns before the mass.
Along with organist Patsy
Crowley, violinist Amanda
Ryan, guitarist Tom Burke,
and soloists Stacy and Kailyn
Burke, the choir sang many
of the favourite hymns of the
parishioners.
Father Lance Magdziak
presided at the mass.
Greeters and giftbearers were
Jim and Karen Cronin. The
ushers were Dan Nolan, Ken
Coyne, Don Cronin and
Gerry Ryan.
The commentator for the
ceremony was Anne Murray.
The reader was Karen
Menheere. Eucharistic
ministers were Frank
Crowley, Gilbert
Vansteelandt and Gerry
O'Reilly. Sacristans were
Mary Maloney and Martha
Claessens.
At theend of the service,
presentations were made to
father Lance, who is leaving
for a new assignment. Kevin
Kale, who is chairman of the
parish advisory board, made
a presentation on behalf of
the parish, while Anne
Murray made a presentation
on behalf of the CWL.
Father Lance played his
guitar
a n d
sang
for the
congregation, "Always
remember me as loving you."
He thanked everyone for
coming to support and be
with the people for this day.
Even before the ceremony
began, people spent time
visiting with each other and
looking at the displays of
pictures and history books set
up in one of the alcoves.
Because of the 173 years of
service to the people in this
community, there is a lot of
history.
A green -coloured brochure
was handed out describing
some of the history, as well
as listing some points of
tit. (oltt lion
interest
and the
list of
pastors
who served here. Forty-six
women from this parish
joined orders of Sisters and
devoted their lives as nuns.
Eighteen men became priests.
Four men joined orders of
brothers. Nine parishioners
served in the Canadian Army
during the First World War,
while 40 parishioners served
in the Second World War.
There were a number of
projects coinciding with the
closing. Fran and Jack
Malone, Claire Murray and
Gary Cronin co-ordinated a
St. Columban cookbook.
Ricki Vansteelandt and Karen
Menheere co-ordinated a
video project of the final
mass and ceremonies taped
by Angela Smith.
Souvenirs of small bottles
of holy water were handed
out to each family. The social
committee co-ordinated the
gathering after the festivities
where everyone could meet
and share memories of their
connection to St. Columban
Parish. Walking away from
the final gathering, one could
hear the bell ringing to mark
this final day.

in the parish hall.
As the graduates returned
to the St. Columban School
gym, they were greeted with
lights on the ceiling and
coloured art work on the
walls. Everyone brought a
mixture of their CDs to enjoy
the dancing which ended
their celebration.

St. Columban Parish received
awards. Ian Murray, son of
Bill and Martha Murray,
