"As you're kneeling there, you

they'll bring a strong faith," she said.

Moylan, who was baptized at St.

"St. Columban had a special faith

families in need forever," she said.
Moylan said that she would be

Community debates if historic church
should bedemolished or designated
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor Editor
With the five members of a
St. Columban transition
committee deciding between
demolishing the 173 -year-
old church and selling it, the
municipality of Huron East
has received two letters
asking for the first church in
the Huron tract to be
declared a heritage site.
Bill Murray, of RR 5
Seaforth, wrote to Huron
East's building inspector
Paul Josling, asking that the
church be considered as a
heritage site before a
demolition permit is granted.

valuable connections to our
historic past, in particular the
opening of the Huron Tract
(Highway 8 from Kitchener
to Goderich)," said Murray's
letter.
Murray was expected to
attend Tuesday night's
council meeting to discuss
the issue.
As well, Thomas Ryan, of
Mitchell, also wrote Josling
asking for a heritage
designation.
"In my estimation it would
be a crying shame and an
everlasting blemish on
present day society if we
willingly and without
opposition allow the
demolition of such an
important link to our
heritage," said Ryan.
Ryan reiterated the
importance of the church to
the settlement of the area,
calling it "one of the building
blocks in the opening of the
Huron Tract."
A letter from Walter
Armes, Local Advisory
Committee on Architectural
Conservation (LACAC)
advisor for Huron
East, recommended the
designation, pointing out that
a church building in
Moncrieff has also been
designated as historically
significant.
"I would ask council to
remember that the St.
Columban Church is the
anchor and landmark for the
hamlet of St. Columban and
that its loss would help
destroy one of the local
identities that council is
trying hard to preserve," said
Armes in his letter.
Kevin Kale, a member of
the committee deciding the
fate of the church, said the
committee is leaning towards
the demolition option and
have not been approached by
anyone interested in buying
the church.
He said the option of
having the church designated
was not one the committee
was contemplating.
"Someone would have to
look after it if it was
designated," he said, adding
that the idea of designating
the church "may be out there
for a few."
While Kale said the
decision could be made as
early as the next few months,
Father Lance Magdziak said
it would probably take six
months or so.
Magdziak said
demolishing the church is
"just one proposal," adding
that the committee must
follow guidelines from the
diocese while determining
what to do with the now
closed church.
"The church could stand
for many years to come but is
that the best thing for the
community? Maybe it would
be best to demolish it and
build a monument. If they
keep it, they'll have to
upkeep it," he said, adding
that demolishing the church
would be a "last resort."
Mary Ryan, a parishioner
at St. Columban, said there's
a feeling in the community
that people don't want to see
the church building end up
being used in a way they
don't like.
"People don't want to see
this sacred space deteriorate
or resold for a purposee they
couldn't live with. They
figure demolition is the best,"
she said.
She added that many
families donated stained
glass windows to the church
only 15 years ago and some
are asking for their windows
back.
"I don't blame them," she
said.
Six -pronged healthcare project
receives $300,000 provincial
grant and $150,000 from trust
From Page i
a -half-year project works at encouraging high
school students to consider a healthcare
career, provides experience for youth at local
health facilities, provides nursing training for
the local workforce, creates temporary work
placements for recent health graduates, makes
the area attractive to international medical
grads and creates community ambassador
teams to promote the area.
Paul Nichol, manager of the Huron
Business Centre who helped write the SHARP
proposal, said the project began when Huron -
Perth Healthcare Alliance recruiter Gwen
Devereaux approached him about three or four
projects she was hoping to implement.
Nichol suggested joining the bunch together
as one project since they were all related to
improving the number of healthcare
professionals in Huron.
"We wanted to look at healthcare in the
broadest terms because it's about more than
doctors - it's about everyone. You can't have a
sound economy without a good healthcare
sector," said Nichol.
The largest chunk of the funding -$225,000
- will be spent on the nurse training program,
which through Georgian College, will train up
to 30 practical registered nurses in Huron and
Perth Counties over the next four years,
beginning Sept. 12.
The provincial funding will allow RPN
students to apply for half of their tuition costs
to be paid.
The community ambassador teams, where
25 community volunteers are trained to
promote the advantages of living and working
in Huron County were Nichol's idea.
He said close to $15,000 will be spent on
training the ambassadors.
Five students are being hired this week to
begin working on development of the SHARP
project and will be placed with Chambers of
Commerce throughout Huron County.
An office is also being sought on Main
Street in Seaforth where the project will be
administered. Devereaux said the SHARP
project could end up being run by the same
body that adminsters the family health team in
Seaforth.
The rural healthcare work placement
segment of the project will receive about
$90,000 of the total, hiring 30 local youth for
summer jobs at Huron healthcare facilities.
As well, close to $15,000 will be spent in
Huron's high schools, educating close to
1,000 students about the full range of
healthcare job opportunities in the county.
"Like Agriculture in the Classroom and
Manufacturing in the Classroom, we'll now
have Medical Technology in the Classroom.
We could have kids in our high schools right
now working right here in healthcare in 10
year's time," said Pam Stanley, president of
the Huron Business Corporation board.
