Parishioners and visitors alike were familiar with his presence as he had served in St. Columban for almost three years before becoming bishop, saying mass and ministering to the people. During the homily, he spoke on a lighter note of hairs being counted, then spoke of God's continuing care for us even during these dark times. At the end of mass, he gave a special blessing to all the fathers present on the occasion of Father's Day. A social time of cookies and refreshment followed as peoplegathered and visited. Family members, relatives, neighbours and friends filled St. Columban Church to capacity to celebrate the marriage of Cathy Coyne to Cain Templeman. Cathy is the daughter of Ken and Mary Coyne, and Cain is the son of Rob and Bev Templeman. Father Joseph Hardy, along St. Columban with Father Lance Magdziak, celebrated mass and officiated at the ceremony. Matron of Honor was Mary Jane Willemse, sister of the bride. The best man was Chad Verberne, friend of the groom. The readings were said by Nic Larsen and Ryan Hoegy, and Andrea Flanagan read the Prayers of the Faithful. The gifts were offered by Aimee de Vries and Susan MacGregor. The altar servers were Matt Coyne and Jordan Coyne. Music was provided by Heather Ann Aucoin, Mary Kathryn Simmons, Maureen Hay, Patricia McCool, and Rob Aucoin, cousins of the bride. After the ceremony, guests gathered at the home of Ken and Mary Coyne with later festivities held in Stratford. Family members, relatives, neighbours and friends gathered in the chapel at the Ritz Villa in Mitchell with Frances Melady for a Memorial Mass celebrated for her son, Jim Melady who died in London on June 14, 2005. Also gathered with their mother were his brothers and sisters, Jeanne, Anne, Pat, Brian, Tom and Don, and their families, and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Ted Melady (1993) and his sister, Maureen (1955). Jim's brother, Tom Melady, spoke to the items presented in Jim's memory and representing his life. Jim's sister, Jeanne Melady, gave a poignant reflection on the many gifts of self brought to Jim as he was dying by his brothers, sisters and mother. A social time followed where there was much visiting and reminiscing, and a time to catch up with everyone. The students at St. Columban School thoroughly enjoyed the "Hawaiian Day" held at the school this past week. Prizes were given to the best dressed in each class. By Mary Ryan HCP seeks to promote Huron County culture A county -wide vision to build a culturally dynamic community is being shaped by a local organization dedicated to promoting arts, culture and heritage in Huron County. Heritage and Cultural Partnership (HCP) is drafting a working document that takes inventory of the existing arts, culture and heritage organizations and facilities across the county, and identifies opportunities to strengthen and celebrate the rich diversity that exists. "There is a growing recognition that the unique arts, culture and heritage of a community have a role to play in enhancing the local economy. It not only attracts tourists, but improves the quality of life for its residents and helps to draw new residents," said Heather Boa, co-ordinator of HCP, which has a membership of 52 businesses and organizations across the county. Qut►tc(1 `There is a growing recognition that the uniqe arts, culture and heritage of a community have a role to play in enhancing the local economy.'— Heritage and Cultural Partnership coordinator Heather Boa HCP nominated Huron County to be named a Cultural Capital of Canada for 2005. The county was short-listed for the distinction, which carries with it a $500,000 award, but was edged out by Victoria, B.C. In their comments, judges praised the county for its museum policy and encouraged development of a cultural plan for further applications. At the same time, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation has begun to promote cultural planning and recently held a series of forums across the province. "The timing seems right on all fronts," said Boa, noting the Huron Business D evelopment Corporation, the Huron County Planning and D evelopment Department, and the Huron County Cultural Services Department also support development of a county -wide cultural plan. HCP will draft a working document over the summer months, and plans to gather public input during one-on- one consultations and public forums. Anyone interested in being affiliated with the beginnings of a plan should contact Boa at 519-482- 7078.
