HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 2005-06-15, Page 1414 - THE HURON EXPOSITOR, June 15, 2005 Motocross action in Walton hotter than the weather The incredible heat and humidity this past weekend was "gruelling" but did not seem to slow down the motocross action in Walton. "The weather was so hot and some people, even the flag people, had some trouble dealing with it," said Chris Lee, of Walton Motocross. Over 3500 racers and spectators endured the hot weather for the two-day event that saw some fast and furious racing by a national record of riders. Over the two days, the event hosted 998 rider entries in 33 different race classes from parts of Quebec, Michigan, Ohio and New York. Ontario riders came from as far as Timmins to the north, Windsor to the south-west and Ottawa to the east. In one class, organizers had to run three qualifying heats for the 120 riders who came to race. The weekend racing was part of the Amateur National Qualifier Series where racers were competing for eligibility for the Grand National Races that are to be held in Walton Aug. 16-21. The event was also round five (of seven) of the Motovan.com Ontario Provincial Championship race series, where battles for provincial championships are running strong. Twenty-two local riders earned Jason Middleton photo Racers in the 50 cc seven and eight-year-old class get ready for a qualifier on Saturday afternoon at the Amateur National Qualifier Series. 12 top 10 finishes with three riders earning podium wins. Mitchell Godkin, of Walton, rode strong with a first place. win in the 50cc GP and a second place finish in the 50cc for the age 7- 8 category. Mackenzie Maclean, of Molesworth, battled for a second place win in the 50cc for 4-6 year- olds and James Bank, of Ethel, earned a solid first place win in the ATV Pro class. Mitchell Godkin also came second in the 50 cc class for 7 -8 - year -olds and his brother Lucas came fourth in the 50cc in the 4-6 year-old category and ninth in the 50 cc GP category. Mackenzie Machan, also came eighth in the 50cc GP class. Cody Richmond, of Brussels came 31st in the 80cc 7 -11 -year-old class and 35th in the 60cc class. Nick Debrusk, of Egmondville, came seventh in the 80cc 12 -16 - year -old class and 14th in the super mini class. Scott Vande Borne, of Egmondville, came 1lth in the 80cc 12 -16 -year-old class and 31st in the super mini class. Tyler Listman, of Kinburn, came 20th in the 80cc 12 -16 -year-old class and 24th in the super mini class. Josh Shea of Seaforth came 40th in the 80 cc 12 -16 -year-old class. Greg Bowers, of Walton, came 18th in the 125 beginner class. Brad Sommerville, of Walton, came 31st in the beginner class and 38th in the 125 beginner GP class. Bruce Godkin, of Walton, came ninth in the 250 beginner vet class and 26th in the junior class. Wes Penelton, of Brussels, came 19th in the 125 junior GP class and 23rd in the junior class. Devin Blake, of Brussels, came 17th in the junior class and 26th in the 125 junior GP class. Tyler Campbell, of Ethel, came eighth in the ATV junior class. Andrew McDonald, of Walton, came 16th in the ATV junior class.
